subcutaneous fascia
also tela subcutanea, superficial fascia. Contains connective tissue, vessels, fat (in outer layer), fibrous tissue (in inner layer). May be fibrous only (ex eyelid or penis)
fascia
A layer or barrier; portion of connective tissue
muscular fascia
Deep fascia, often associated with a covering of muscle; is very strong
epimysium
layer around muscle directly associated with deep fascia, ensheaths the entire muscle. Connects with tendons
Perimysium
Sheath of connective tissue that groups muscle fibers into bundles (anywhere between 10 to 100 or more) or fascicles. Separates an entire muscle into sections
Endomysium
Layer of connective tissue that ensheaths an individual muscle fiber
Insertion
Point at which a muscle attaches to skin, bone, or another muscle; usually via tendon to bone. Attachment is to structure which will be moved by contraction of the muscle.
Origin
Point of attachment of a muscle, to a structure which will NOT be moved by its contraction
Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)
Anterior extremity of iliac crest; provides attachment for sartorius and inguinal ligament
Sartorius (Tailor's muscle)
Origin is ASIS, inserts into proximal tibia on medial aspect. Assists in flexion, abduction and lateral rotation of the hip; also flexion of knee (checking to see if gum is on the bottom of your shoe=all 4 actions). Located in anterior fascial compartment of the thigh, innervated by anterior branch of the femoral nerve.
Saphenous opening
oval opening in superomedial part of fascia lata; transmits great saphenous vein AS WELL AS the femoral branch of genitofemoral nerve
