Alphamethyl-DA
Dopa decarboxylase inhibitor (dec production of DA, E, and NE). Reduced DA and adrenergic effects. Treats: hypertension. Side effects: CNS--depression, anxiety, parkinsonism
Alphamethyl-NE
Metabolized from Alphamethyl-DA. a2-R agonist. Activates inhibitory autoR and heteroR, resulting in suppression of sympathetic effects. Treats: hypertension
atenolol
b1 selective antagonist. Treats: CV disease. Side effects: no CNS effects
Atropine
competitive antagonist for mAchR. PS->effector blocker.
Clonidine
a2 selective agonist. stimulates a2R in vasomotor center of brainstem, decreasing CO and peripheral resistance. Treats: hypertension.
cocaine
inhibit NT reuptake in dopaminergic neurons. (cocaine paradox--> cocaine enhances effects of NE -> hypertension)
dobutamine
b1 selective agonist
DOPA
converted by dopa-decarboxylase -> dopaine. Treats: PD
Ephedrine
mixed sympatomimetic. weakly activates a-R and b-R. packaged with NE and increases release of NE.
epinephrine
Non-selective agonist of a and b R. released by adrenal medula.
isoproterenol
b1 and b2 agonist. used to treat bradycardia (b1, b2) and used to be used to treat asthma (b2, relax airways). It produces vasodilation in arteries (b2), and increases cardiac output (b1)→ increase systolic bp and decrease diastolic.
Neostigmine
AchE inhibitor. Used to treat myasthemia gravis. Used with anti-cholinergics to block PS-effector junction while retaining effect at NMJ.
Norepinephrine
a and b1-selective agonist. released by postgang symp neurons and adrenal medulla.
Phentolamine
nonselective a-R antagonist
phenylphrine
a1-R agonist. Used as decongestant, pupil dilator, increase bp
pilocarpine
mAchR agonist. Treats: open-angle glaucoma. Increased PS-> open canal of schlemm -> dec intraoccular pressure.
prazocin
a1 R antagonist. Treats: hypertension.
propranolol
non-selective B antagonist. Treats: arrythmias. Cross BBB so has cns effects.
Reserpine
inactivates the pump that accumulates NE in vesicles. Inhibits sympathetic function. Treats: hypertension. Side effects: Parkinsonism, depression.
Terbutaline
B2 selective agonist. Treats: asthma and COPD (bronchodilation) and preterm labor (uterine relaxation).
Tranylcypramine
nonspecific inhibitor for monoamine oxidase (MAO), preventing metabolism of biogenic amines.--> hypertension
alpha responses
- vasoconstriction
- eye radial mm constriction (pupillary constriction) - piloerection - gut relaxation - CNS effects |
B responses
- vasodilation
- cardiac stimulation - bronchodilation - gut relaxation - uterine relaxation - renin release |
b1 - 3 responses
b1: heart and renin
b2: vasodil, bronchodil, uterine relaxation, gut relaxation b3: lypolysis and bladder relax |
NE:
effect on BP, Pulse, Peripheral R. |
BP: increased systolic and diastolic.
Pulse: slight decrease (reflex) Resistance: increased (hit a and b1, doesnt hit b2 R--no vasodil, only increased cardiac output) |
E:
effect on BP, Pulse, Peripheral R. |
BP: increased systolic and decreased diastolic (balance of vasodil and vasoconstriction)
pulse: increase (b1) resistance: decrease (b2 > a) (hit all alpha and beta) |
Isoprotenenol:
effect on BP, Pulse, Peripheral R. |
BP: slight increased systolic and decreased diastolic
Pulse: increased (b1) Resistance: decreases a lot (b2) (only hits b receptors, no vasoconstriction) |
