Homeostasis

Maintenance of a steady internal envt, despite changes in ext envt to ensure that biochemical rxns can take place.

Ectotherms

Organisms that derive body heat from external envt (sun, etc)

Endotherms

Organisms that derive body heat from metabolism

Thermoregulation

Process by which animals maintain an int temperature w/in tolerable range - necessary for biochemical reactions as enzymes lose activity.

Temperature vs Heat

Temperature is a non size specific measure of motion of atoms in a substance, while heat is a size specific measure of energy content of a body.

Integumentary system

Refers to outer covering, such as skin, nails and hair. (impt here is BLUBBER)

Insulation

An adaptation by animals that live in env colder than their core body temp (^temp diff, ^ rate at which heat is lost)

Hair/Feathers - Adaptation

Traps a layer of air near skin, preventing air from flowing and removing heat away from skin.

Blubber

serves as a layer of insulation to reduce heat loss

Shivering

Shivering involves the involuntary contraction and relaxation of muscle tissues, thus allowing for the production of metabolic heat.
