What are cells?
Cells are units of living matter.
The cells is composed of three layers-what are they?
Outer-Protine and Polysacharide (sugar)
Middle-Lipid
Inner-Protine
Substances can be transported across the cell membrane in 4 ways. What are they?
Through pores
Dissolve in lipid membrane and diffuse through.
Active transport mechanism
Carrier molocules
Describe Cytoplasm
Semi-fluid like jelly
Not static but constantly being renewed
The nucleus and organells are suspended in the cytoplasm
Constits of water, glucose, organic and inorganic salts. nitrogenous substances
What is the nulceus?
It is the 'brain' of the cell
It has a dense body and is essential to the cell
What is a Nucleolus?
One or more can be found in the Nuclues and its job is to make ribosomes
What are Organells?
They are the visible structures within the cell excluding the nucleus
What are Mitochondria?
They are the powerstations of the cell.
They have a greatly folded inner and outer (smooth) membrane
What are Lysosomes?
They are the digestive system of the cells
They contain enzymes
What are Vacuoles?
These are clear spaces within the cell that contain the waste products and bacteria of the cell
What is the Golgi complex?
This system sythesises protines, fats and lysosomal enzymes
What is Endoplasmic reticulum (rough)
Includes ribosomes
A network of membrane continuous with the nulear membrane
What is Endoplasmic reticulum (smooth)
Is involved in protine and lipid synthesis
A network of membrane continuous with the nulear membrane
What are Ribosomes?
They synthesis protine
They are made in the nucleolus and are composed of mainly RNA (Ribonucleic Acid)
What are Centioles?
Centriols are concerned with cell devision.
They are tubular in shape
What is a Centrosome?
Condenced area of cytoplasm containing two centrioles
Concerned with the movement of chromosomes
What is Melanin?
It is responsible for the pigment found in hair, eye colour etc.
It is a brown/black substance found in cytoplasm
What is Haemosiderin?
Insoluble form of Iron
The apperance of Haemosiderin and Melanin can often be confused
