How do you know if an organism is an animal? What are the characteristics that scientists should look for? |
You can tell if an organism is an animal if they have the following characteristics: -Multicellular organism -Capable of locomotion -Heterotroph (feeds off other organisms for energy) -Is responsive -No cell wall -Has a nervous system and muscle tissue |
What is the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates? |
The difference between a vertebrate and invertebrate is, vertebrates have a backbone and invertebrates do not. |
Define and give an example of the following invertebrate category: Poriferans |
Define: has a lot of pores Ex: sponges |
Define and give an example of the following invertebrate category: Cnidarians |
Define: bodies are sac like and they can sting you. Ex: jelly fish/sea anemones |
Define and give an example of the following invertebrate category: Mollusks |
Define: have soft bodies, sometimes have a shell around them. Ex: squid/clams |
Define and give an example of the following invertebrate category: Annelids |
Define: Segmented worms, distinct head and anus at end of tail. Ex: earthworms/leeches |
Define and give an example of the following invertebrate category: Arthropods |
Define: Exoskeleton, jointed limbs, and body segments (head, chest/thorax, belly/abdomen). Ex: crabs/spiders/insects |
Define and give an example of the following invertebrate category: Platyhelminthes |
Define: Flat worms, sometimes parasitic. Ex: tapeworms/planarians |
Define and give an example of the following invertebrate category: Echinoderms |
Define: literally means spiny skin, endoskeleton. Ex: Sea star/ sea urchin |
What is the difference between endotherm and ectotherm? |
The difference between endotherm and ectotherm is, endotherm=warm blooded, while ectotherms=cold blooded. |
What do fish and amphibians have in common? (Hint: Include reproduction amongst other characteristics) |
Both amphibians and fish lay eggs in or near water however, fish develop the eggs inside the mom before laying them. The process of fertilization happens outside the body for amphibians while it is internal for fish. amphibians live a part of their life in the water but leave the water for their adult stage and the juveniles have gills just like fish. |
What do amphibians and reptiles have in common? (Hint: Include reproduction amongst other characteristics) |
Both reptiles and amphibians lay eggs, reptile fertilize the eggs internally while the fertilization for amphibians is external. Amphibian eggs have no shell around then while reptile eggs do have a shell around them. Both have a cloaca. |
Birds are classified in the reptile group. What characteristics cause biologists to put them into this class? (Hint: Include reproduction amongst other characteristics) |
Birds are put into the reptile group because, they lay eggs with shells around them much like reptiles do. |
What makes reptiles different than mammals? (Hint: Include reproduction amongst other characteristics) |
Reptiles are different from mammals because reptiles lay eggs while mammals give live birth. reptiles are coldblooded and don't have fur while mammals are warmblooded and have fur and mammary glands. |
What is ethology? |
The study of animal behavior under natural conditions. |
What are the two purposes of all animal behavior? |
The two purposes of animal behavior are to survive and to reproduce. |
What is the difference between proximate causes of behavior and ultimate causes of behavior? |
The difference between proximate and ultimate causes of behavior is, proximate= in the body (how/physically) ultimate= in the end/ what it leads to |
Give an example of a proximate cause question and ultimate cause question. |
How does the animal use its motor or sensory abilities to activate and modify its behavior? |
What is an adaptation? Can behavior be an adaptation? Please give an example if so. |

What is fitness? Give an example of an animal that is fit for its environment and why it is fit for that environment. |
