enters foramen transversalis at 6th cervical vertebra
enters skull at foramen magnum and contributes to basilar artery and Circle and Willis
2. thyrocervical
1. inferior thyroid - thyroid gland, trachea, gives rise to ascending cervical artery (vertebrae prevertebral neck muscles)
2. transverse cervical - supplies trapezius, serratus, rotator cuff
3. suprascapular: supplies supraspinatus and infraspinatus, subscapularis, terres major and SCM
3. costacervical
gives rise to arteries that supply back of neck and bran
4. internal thoracic artery
--> anterior intercostal arteries --> superior epigastric artery (supplies diaphragm, rectus abdominus muscles). descends and anastomoss with inferior epigastric artery (branch of external iliac)
