olim in Circo Maximo ludus bestiarius populo dabatur. |
Once upon a time in the Circus Maximus, a wild beast show was being put on for the people. |
All the lions were a source of wonder to the spectators, but one of them seemed particularly ferocious. |
There had been brought in to the wild beast fight, among several (others), a certain slave whose name was Androcles. |
When the lion saw him in the distance it suddenly stopped, as if in wonderment, and then - slowly and quietly - it begin to approach the man. |
tum caudam clementer et blande movens, manus hominis, prope iam metu exanimanti, lingua lambit. |
Then wagging its tail in a gentle, friendly way it licked with its tongue the hands of the man who was by now nearly paralyzed with fear. |
Androcles, amino iam recuperato, leonem attentius spectavit. |
Androcles, who had now recovered his senses, looked at the lion more closely. |
tum, quasi mutua recognitione facta, laeti ibi stabant et homo et leo. |
Then, as if recognizing one another, they stood there happily, both the man and the lion. (There ya go, Tim, ya pedantic carrot twerp midget... *grumble grumble grumble*) |
ea res tam mirabilis turbam maxime excitavit. |
Such a remarkable occurrence as this thrilled the crowd to a very great degree. |
Androclem ad pulvinar arcessitum rogavit Caesar cur ille saevissimus leo ei soli pepercisset. |
The emperor summoned Androcles to his box and asked him why that extremely savage lion had spared him alone. |
tum Androcles rem mirabilem narravit: |
Then Androcles told a remarkable story: |
"dum ego in Africa cum domino meo habito," inquit "propter eius crudelitatem fugere coactus in speluncam confugi." |
"While I was living with my master in Africa", he said, " I was forced to run away, because of his cruelty, and I took refuge in a cave." |
"Haud molto post ad eandem speluncam venit hic leo gemens et dolens, uno pede claudus." |
"Not long after, this lion came to the same cave whining and in pain, lame in one foot." |
"atque primo quidem terroris plenus latebam" |
"And at first of course I lay in hiding, filled with terror." |
"sed leo, cum me conspecisset, mitis et mansuetus appropinquavit atque pedem mihi ostendit, quasi auxilium petens." |
"But when the lion caught sight of me, it came up to me gently and tamely and indicated its paw, as if asking for help" |
"stirpen ingentem, quae in eius pede haerebat, ego extraci ac iam sine magno timore vulnus lavi" |
"I pulled out an enormous thorn, which was stuck in its paw, and, by now without any fear at all, I washed the wound" |
"tum ille, pede in manibus meis posito, recubuit et dormivit." |
"Then the lion, after putting its paw in my hands, lay down and fell asleep." |
"tres annos ego et leo in eadem spelunca habitabamus, eodem cibo vescentes" |
"For three years the lions and I lived in the same cave, feeding on the same food." |
"postea captus a militibus, reductus sum ad dominum qui me statim ad bestiaas condemnavit" |
"Later, when I was captured by soldiers, I was taken back to my master who immediately condemned me to the beasts." |
princeps, fabula servi audita, maxime admirabatur. |
After the emperor had heard the slave's story, he was completely amazed. |
Androcles omnium consensu liberatus est, datusque ei leo. |
By general agreement Androcles was set free and the lion was given to him. |
