Binomial Nomenclature

Classification naming system in which each species is assigned a two-part scientific name

Taxon

A group or level of organization into which organisms are classified.

Aristotle

First person to start classifying objects into either plants or animals.

Linnaeus

A person considered to be the father of modern classification. He came up with the scientific naming system.

Eukaryotic Cell

Cell type that contains a nucleus

Prokaryotic Cell

Cell type that does not contain a nucleus

Species

A group of organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.

Latin

Language that all scientific names are written in.

Eubacteria

A kingdom of unicellular prokaryotes whose cell walls are made up of peptidoglycan.

Archaea

A domain of organisms that are unicellular and prokaryotic. They have cell walls that are not made of peptidoglycan.

Taxonomy

The Science of Classification

Dichotomous Key

A tool that uses series of paired statements that describe physical characteristics of different organisms. In each pair there are only two “questions” – can help in identifying an organism

Domain

Largest category of living things, larger than a kingdom.

Archaebacteria

A kingdom of organisms that are unicellular and prokaryotic. They have cell walls that are not made of peptidoglycan.

Protista

A kingdom of organisms that are eukaryotic and are not classified as plants, animals, or fungi.

Animalia

A kingdom of organisms that are multicellular, eukaryotic and heterotrophic whose cells do not have cell walls

Multicellular

Organism that contains many cells.

Unicellular

Organism that have only one cell.

Classification

A way to organize organisms and put them into groups of similar organisms.

Fungi

A kingdom composed of heterotrophic, eukaryotic organisms: many obtain energy by decomposition.

Plantae

A kingdom of organisms that are multicellular, eukaryotic and photosynthetic whose cells have cell walls made of cellulose.

Bacteria

A domain of unicellular and prokaryotic organisms. They can be Autotrophic and Heterotrophic. Cell walls have peptidoglycan.

Cladogram

Chart or diagram showing evolutionary relationships between organisms

Eukarya

A domain in which all organism have a nucleus.
