Paterfamilias

Power of the father; execute laws; punishment; religious leadership

Mutual obligations between patron and client; patron has to give legal and physical protection; client gives political support, body as a soldier and loyalty

Consul

Replaced monarchy; consists of two men chosen by the senate; prevents one from becoming a tyrant; 1 year term; after that a part of the senate

Born into a family that can become a senate; it's a lifelong job

Dictator

Gets selected during a crisis; for 6 months; someone who has all the power --> general fear of too much power in a person

Pompey, Caesar, Crassus; part of illegal organization; Caesar commits treason by not giving to his command; is the last one standing after the civil war

Julius Caesar

Was a populare; afraid of a dictatorship but made himself dictator for life; was killed in the "Ides of march" bc people tried to get back to the roman republic

2nd Triumvirate

Mark Anthony, Octavian, Lepidus; wanted to take conspirators to justice; no return to republic; Anthony and cleopatra killed in the civil war
