Abraham

Yahweh picked him to make a covenantal promise and begins the history of Israelites. He and his descendants lived in Syria-Palestine. His family's history is explained in Genesis.

Anat

A daughter of Ra. Ra gave her to Seth as a wife. She is mistress of El and sister of Baal. She fights against monsters with Baal, and goes into mourning and gives sacrifices for Baal's death-offering. She defeated Mot.

Ark of Covenant

A 'footstool' of sorts the spirit of Yahweh was meant to reside made by Moses. Placed within the Temple at Jerusalem. It was located within the Holy of Holies the innermost sacred sanctuary within the church. This area was saved for the most sacred of artifacts.

Asherah (Athirat)

The 'creatress of the gods' or the mother of the gods and is the consort and sister to El. Fertility goddess and many figurines represent holding her breasts emphasizing. Depicted as the consort of Yahweh.

Astarte

Goddess who appears to be the Canaanite version of the Babylonian goddess Ishtar. Goddess of fertility, war, and sexuality. Having a strong association with the goddess Anat. Hebrew monotheism depicts her as a demon of lust.

Baal

The son of El. Divine warrior, 'Lord' or 'Master.' Astarte is a consort of him. Storm god having the title of 'Rider of the Clouds.' Associated with Hadad who is also the god of storms.

Chemosh

The god of the Moab region, and worshipped at Ugarit. Either be merciful and wrath.

Covenant between Abraham and Yahweh

Explains the change from polytheism to monotheism in Canaan. Abraham made a binding promise to give all of his faith, and all his descendants' faiths to Yahweh. Yahweh would make his people great dominion over Canaaan.

Covenant between Yahweh and Israel at Sinai

The stipulation under the god, 'You shall be my people, and I shall be your God.' Presented in Exodus, Moses' story.

Dagon

An ancient Levantine (Canaanite) deity. The chief deity of the Philistines. The father of Baal; it is believed that his function as a god was taken from Baal and his divone function are now the work of Baal and El.

David

Once Saul's military commander. Married Saul's daughter, Michal. Yahweh picked him to the ruler of Israel.

El

The chief god of the Syrian-Palestine pantheon. The father of all other gods of creation. The oldest most respected of the gods. Consort is Asherah. Benevolent and often associate with Yahweh.

Elijah

A prophet of Israel during Ahab governed the kingdom. His deeds and words are described in the Book of Kings. Worshipped Yahweh as only god the giver of all good things, spoke against Ahab's worshipping Baal.

Henotheism

The intermediate word between monotheism and polytheism. Being faithful to one particular god out of several, especially by a family, tribe, or other group.

Hezekiah

A leader of the kingdom of Judah on the Levantine coast. Tried to organize a rebellion against the Assyrian empire after Sargon II's death in 705 BCE, but failed. Restricted the worship of Yahweh to the temple of Jerusalem.

hieros gamos

The sacred rite of sexual intercourse between the political leader and a high priestess, who was presenting a fertility goddess. This act was thought to ensure an abundance of crops and animals in the coming year.

A Canaanite tribe who built the city in Jerusalem, lived in the part of the southern portion of Palestine. Became Judah

Lothan

A promordial sea monster in Canaanite mythology. A minion of price Yamm and is engaged in battle with Baal and Anat. Egyptian monster Apophis, Tiamat, Leviathan.

Y... Melqart

The god of the Phoenician city of Tyre. Different sort of god than the warrior Baal. Instead a god of the underworld comparable to Nergal.

Molech

Head god of the Ammonites, to which Solomon built a shrine on a high peak to the east of Jerusalem. Ritual sacrifice to him (bosheth-shameful)

Mot

'Death' the god of sterility and the ruler of underworld. Represents both death and all force oppose life. The enemy of the other gods. Anat defeated him and scattered his body.

Passover

Jewish celebration of the Exodus from Egypt (escape from slavery in Egypt under Pharao Ramesses II).

Pentateuch

The Torah: the first five books of the Old Testament (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy).

Philistines

One of the 'Sea Peoples' who contributed to the Late Bronze Age collapse. Came to inhabit the area along the Levantine coast just north of Egypt during mid-12th BC. Dominate Palestine. Chief deity was Dagon.

Prince Yamm

The Ugaritic god of the sea. El sends Baal to him as a slave. When his messanger refuses to bow to El, Baal ends up beating him to death.

A religious observance of the Israelites, day of rest that was created by Elohim as his final work of creation. Means 'to cease, desist'.

Salim

The chief god of the Jebusites. His name is incorporated into the name of the Jebusite capital Jerusalem, 'foundation of Salim.'

Shalom

A harmonious relationship between the Israelite and the divine world that Yahweh is in charge of. Related to the Sinai Covenant.

Solomon

The son of David, born of Bathsheba. His reign is presented in the book of Kings as a golden age for Judah and Israel. Wise and fair king. Built the temple that symbolized an attempt to synthesize urban religious Jebusite culture with the pastoral religious culture.

Syncretism

The idea that gods, myth, and rituals from one area and can be combined with another area. This can either happen when one place takes or uses other places gods and myths, or two places come together to realize they have similar gods or same gods.

Yahweh

The god of temple in Jerusalem and the husband of Asherah. Idetified with El and referred to as god of the mountain. Associated with stoems due to his rival Baal.

Yahweh Elohim

An alternative version of Yahweh, his creation story is different with Yahweh, limited to 1day.
