The civilization I chose is Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia thrived around 300 B.C.E. It was called the Fertile Crescent due to its fertile soil and how easy it was to grow food. Mesopotamia also had the Tigris and Euphrates River. Their rivers were filled with wildlife and vegetation. Some wildlife includes sheep, pigs, goat etc. Some vegetation is wheat, barley, dates etc. The continent Mesopotamia is located on is Asia.

INTRODUCTION

Food was in no terms scarce in Ancient Mesopotamia. Beer and bread was the most common food and drink in Ancient Mesopotamia. If they happened to go on a diet they would eat raw food and vegetables. They also farmed for their food. Also they cooked most of their food on a dome oven. On the dome oven they also grilled and boiled food. In Mesopotamia their meat was very pricey. They also farmed there food easily because of the fertile soil and large amounts of water they had. They had hot and dry summers but cool and wet winters. I did not find any information on how the climate affected their food supply but because of there hot and dry summers I can assume it grew well.

Food

In Ancient Mesopotamia there were three types of people. The Sumerians, Assyrians, and Babylonians. They all had their own form of government. The kings and queens decided what gods to worship and how to honor them. The assembly could however overrule the law and if the king was good he would listen and remove the law.Sumerians had certain punishments for doing thing like stealing and offending gods. The king made sure everyone knew what the laws were so there was no saying they didn’t know they couldn’t do that. The king also made sure everyone knew the punishment as well.Babylonians took over the city-state of Sumer due to it weakening. Babylonia had similar laws to Sumer. A King or Noble ruled, with the help of the assembly. Most of the laws of Babylonia were from Sumer. Assyrians were a powerful military state in northern Mesopotamia. (it is now northern Iraq.) The Assyrians were led by a king who ruled and represented the god Ashur. Ashur was the most powerful god to the Assyrians. The military officers were in charge of the local government. The king also pulled Nobles to be his advisors. The most important noble was the chief of the staff. The chief of the staff could decide who could or couldn’t talk to the king on any day. Kept note of laws on paper. Scribes were the only people who couldn’t read or write. There was also no assembly the King’s word was the law.

Government

In Ancient Mesopotamia they had four different classes of people. These classes were slaves, middle class, upper class, and the priests, nobles, kings being the highest class. Slaves were the lowest class of people while normal people were in the middle and nobles & kings were on top. Sumerians kept slaves. Bring back defeated towns slaves and take prisoners as slaves. Slaves were kept mostly by kings and nobles but wealthy Sumerians could buy them too. The lower class wore jewelry but not with precious stones or gold. The upper class wore jewelry. The men had long beards and long hair and wore a skirt like garment. Women wore dresses with a bare shoulder. In the colder months they wore cloaks to protect themselves from the cold weather. Priests were very powerful and important people. They were teachers and local doctors as well. They taught people how to appeal to the gods they believed in and if you were sick you were sent to a priest to be taken care of. They also shaved their heads to let people know they were a priest.

Social Classes

The division of labor in Ancient Mesopotamia doesn’t have much known about it. In Mesopotamia there were several jobs done. For example there were craftsmen (carpenters, metalworkers, and sculptors) Merchants, boatmen, priests, soldiers, and doctors. People mostly hunted for food and there was no jobs until the cities blew up and became big. After the city blew up farmers still did their jobs out in the country. Men did the jobs while women stayed at home and cared for the children. Girls were raised to be wives and mothers whereas the boys were taught learning skills to do the work when their older. There is not any more specific information on the division of labor.

Division of Labor

In Ancient Mesopotamia they had traditions and festivals. Bodies were buried in a ceramic jar but that method is believed to be for children and infants. Other methods included wrapping people up in carpets, rugs, or mats. The cultures in Mesopotamia were all polytheistic. They also believed that gods made demons and that they could be good or bad. They felt it was necessary to appeal to the gods and praise them daily. In Ancient Mesopotamia they didn’t know how to make hollow buildings. They Built huge staircases of mud that lead to a temple called a Ziggurats. They also built walls around their town with mud and bricks.I could not find any facts on the art, music and games of Mesopotamia. However I can assume their art was similar to their architecture and they also had board games like chess. In conclusion the civilization of Ancient Mesopotamia had many facts and interesting topics.
