What were the characteristics of Greek City States?

1. The Greek City States had no centralized government




2. Consisted of the city and the surrounding country side.

What was Athens like in Ancient Greece?

-Athens was the first democratic government in which some of the people shared power




-The birthplace of many significant ideas which were developed by intellectuals.

What was Sparta like?

-Sparta had a militarized government




-Ruled by an oligarchy two kings and an oligarchy (small group of people who had control)




-Spartans lived the military lifestyle; they were under a strict regime



Greek Economy

-Greeks were farmers, fishermen, miners and traded heavily.




-Major Powers in Greece were the Persians and the Phoenicians




-Slaves played a key role in the economy.

Traveling Intellectuals

-Intellectuals such as Plato, Aristotle and Socrates traveled to gain experience and be exposed to other methods of thinking.




-They would meet up with each other and share ideas about their views on the world



-These men were well off and had time to think




-These intellectuals came up with some of the most significant ideas which many are still being discussed today.

-your view has to be jusified by reasoning

1. Checks and Balances: should have separate branch checking leader's power


-Leader who is not accountable becomes reckless
