1. What information can be concluded about religious beliefs/practices and burial customs from the evidence gathered from bog bodies such as Lindow Man, GrauballenMan, Windeby Girl and Tollund Man?

- ritualistic death

- all exhibit slit throats, a commonality during the iron age

- close location to one another provide evidence to suggest that they were victims of a paganistic ritual

- all found in bogs, as these bodies of water were seen as conduits to the gods

-adorned in jewellery and coat

-The good condition of teeth and the diet revealed after examining the bodies suggest that these bodies may in fact be kings sacrificed to the gods.

What are some ways in which ancient human remains are preserved?

-Ice- the freezing temperatures dry out the body and do not allow bacteria to survive, meaning that the skin becomes leathery and the internal organs and bones are preserved. The cells, frozen in place, prevent decay.

Sand- arid, dry sand is great for preservation as it absorbs fluid from the corpse, meaning that, without moisture, the body can not decompose or develop bacteria. As well as this, the heat assists in leathering and preserving the quality of skin.

Peat- Unlike the other two environments, the acidic content of peat bogs eats away at the internal organs calcium carbonate, meaning that only the outside skin survives. The combination of a lack of oxygen under layers of sphagnum, antibacterial mosses and the cold temperature and lack of oxygen within the bog allows the body to resist decay.

What are some written evidences for bog bodies?

- Tacitus, a Roman Writer observed/described thecustoms of ancient celtic tribe

- He observed the punishments for crimes andsacrifices made at certain times in the year
