1492

Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue. His "discovery" began the European settlements in the Americas.

1607

Jamestown, Virginia - the first permanent British settlement in North America.

1776

The Declaration of Independence - This document was signed by America’s Founding Fathers to tell (King George) Britain that we are our own country.

1861 - 1865

Civil War - the result was the end of slavery in the United State (and keeping the states united as one country), but the bad feelings lasted a long time between the North and the South.

1930's

The Great Depression - the deepest & longest-lasting economic downturn in the history. Many people were poor and unemployed. Many people were out of work, hungry, or homeless. It started in the United States, but it quickly spread throughout the world.

1941 - 1945

World War II was a global war.


The world's most powerful countries fought as part of two military alliances: the Allies and the Axis.


The Holocaust was part of this war.

The Civil Rights Movement - Led by Martin Luther King Jr., - a struggle by African Americans to achieve rights equal to those of whites (employment, housing, education, the right to vote, the right to equal access to public facilities)
