Coronary Sulcus
Also known as atrioventricular. Separates atria from ventricles.
Sulcus Terminalis
Sulcus connecting right margin of superior and inferior Vena Cava.
Pericardial sac
Double walled sac that surrounds heart and roots of vesicles. Has both a fibrous and 2 serous layers.
Layers of pericardium
Fibrous pericardium - stout external layer.
Serous pericardium - has parietal layer fused to fibrous pericardium and visceral layer which covers the heart itself (also called epicardium).
Transverse Pericardial Sinus
Space posterior to ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk and anterior to superior vena cava.
Oblique Pericardial Sinus
Blind recess on posterior aspect of heart caused by pullmonary veins and inferior vena cava.
Projection of heart apex onto thoracic wall
8 cm from median plane in left 5th intercostal space
Contents and connections to base of heart
Mainly formed by left atrium, a small part of right atrium. Pulmonary veins and superior and inferior vena cava connect with base.
Inferior border location on chest wall
Line sloping caudally and to the left through xiphosternal junction
Right border location on chest wall
3cm to right of sternal margin
Left border location on chest wall
Angles superiorly from apex to second intercostal space, 3 cm from sternal margin.
Beginning of ascending aorta location on chest wall
3rd intercostal space.
Pulmonary valve chest wall location and listen location
Located left of sternum at level of 3rd costal cartilage.
Listen in second intercostal space on left.
Aortic valve chest wall location and listen location
Located near left side of sternum at level of 3rd intercostal space.
Listen in second intercostal space on right.
Mitral valve chest wall location and listen location
Located near left of sternum at level of 4th costal cartilage.
Listen in 5th costal cartilage 3 and 1/2 inches to left of midline
Sinus Venarum
Smooth part between 2 Vena Cava in right atrium. Located on posterior wall of right atrium.
Crista Terminalis
Internal to sulcus terninalis, separates the right atrium from the vena cava internally.
Pectinate Muscles
Bundles of rough muscle fibers. Found in the auricula of the atria.
Fossa Ovalis
Embryonic remenant of foramen ovale. Is a smooth oval found on wall of right atrium. Limbus of fossa ovalis is prominant ridge of oval.
Tricuspid valve
Valve between the right atrium and ventricle. Muscles located in ventricle. Have septal, posterior, and anterior muscles.
Trabeculae Carnae
Thick muscle bundles in ventricles which give the ventricle the rugged appearance.
Septomarginal Trabeculae (Moderator Band)
Extends from interventricular septum to the root of the anterior papillary muscle of the right ventricle.
Papillary Muscles
Conical projections of ventricular muscle related to the AV valve cusps.
Chorda Tendineae
Fibrous chords attaching papilary muscles to the valve cusps of the AV valves.
Infundibulum
(aka conus arteriosus or outflow tract) Smooth part of right ventricle just inferior to the pulmonary valve.
Supraventricular Crest
Ridge on the inner wall of the right ventricle separating the infundibulum and the trabecular portion of ventricle. (seperates inflow and outflow tracts).
Auricle
Atrial appendage
Valve of foramen ovale
On the left atrium opposite the fossa ovalis.
Mitral Valve
Valve between the left atrium and ventricle. Has both anterior and posterior muscles.
Aortic Vestibule
(aka outflow tract) Smooth portion of the left ventricle just inferior to the aortic valve. Separated from the inflow tract by the anterior mitral cusp.
Membranous part of the interventricular septum
Below the right and posterior cusps of the aortic valve.
Semilunar valves
Valves of the ventricles to their arteries. Have 3 cusps with nodules. Have pulmonary valve and aortic valve.
SA Node
Pacemaker. At upper end of the sulcus terminalis at junction of superior vena cava and right atrium.
AV node
At right side of the interatrial septum above and in front of the opening of the coronary sinus.
Atrioventricular bundle (Bundle of His)
Runs below the membranous part of interventricular septum. Divides into left and right bundle branches.
Right - Chord-like and runs on moderator band. Connects with purkinje fiber network of right ventricle.
Left - Wider than righ, divides into anterior and posterior fasciculi on the left surface of the interventricular septum. Connects with the purkinje network.
Supraventricular Crest
Along with the septomarginal trabeculae, seperates the trabecular portion of right ventricle (inflow tract) from the smooth portion (infunbibulum, outflow tract).
Pulmonary Orifice
Gaurded by Pulmonary valve
