Areolar CT
Location: Surrounds organs, "UNIVERSAL PACKING MATERIAL"
Function: Protection, Absorption of ISF
Adipose CT
Location: wraps around most vital organs or supports vital organs (in ventral body cavity)
Function: Shock absorber, Triglycerides store energy, Insulation
Dense Regular CT
Function: Parallel rows of collagen fibers alternating with rows of fibroblasts, support
Location: Tendons, Ligaments, Aponeuroses, Fascia
Dense Irregular CT
Function: Thicker bundles of collagen fibers arranged in an irregular fashion -- face several directions
Location: Reticular layer of dermis, Forms joint capsules and their fibrous capsules, highly vascularized
Elastic CT
Function: Allows structures to stretch under pressure and to recoil to their original size/shape
Location: The ventricles of the heart, Bronchi in lungs
Reticular CT
Function: involved in the immune response because it allows for proliferation of the lymphoid cells
Location: forms stroma (internal skeleton) of the lymphoid organs
Hyaline cartilage
Function: Support, protection, shock absorbers; glossy appearance due to fine collagen fibers
Location: forms embryonic skeleton
ARTICULAR cartilage - caps ends of long bones
COSTAL cartilage - connects ribs to sternum
EPIPHYSEAL plates - allows longitudinal bone growth
Fibrocartilage
Function: Tough but flexible and it acts as a shock absorber
Location: Forms intervertebral discs, forms knee pads (menisci), forms pubic symphisis, similar to hyaline cartilage but less firm due to thick collagen fibers
Elastic cartilage
Function: Allows for stretch and recoil
Location: Pinna and epiglottis, similar to hyaline cartilage but with elastic fibers
Cutaneous membrane
Overlying tissue: Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
Underlying tissue: Dense, irregular CT
Mucous membrane
Overlying tissue: Nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium or simple columnar epithelium
Underlying tissue: Areolar CT (LAMINA PROPRIA)
Serous membrane
Overlying tissue: MESOTHELIUM (simple squamous epithelium)
Underlying tissue: Areolar CT
Names: PERICARDIUM, PLEURA, PERITONEUM (abdominopelvic)
Synovial membrane
Overlying tissue: Areolar CT
Underlying tissue: Dense irregular CT
Carcinoma
cancer of epithelial tissues
Adenoma
benign or malignant neoplasia of the glandular epithelium
Sarcoma
cancer of the connective or muscle tissue
Melanoma
cancer of the MELANOCYTES - deadliest form of skin cancer
