MEDIAN

the midline plane dividing the body into left/right

SAGITTAL

plane dividing the body into unequal left & right parts & parallel to the median plane

FRONTAL

plane dividing the body into front & back parts

CROSS HORIZONTAL

horizontal plane divides the body into upper & lower parts; cross sections are perpendicular to the long axis of the body

CRANIAL/(SUPERIOR) POSITION

structure being closer to the head or higher than another structure (top of limb)

CAUDAL, (INFERIOR) POSITION

structure being closer to the feet or lower than another structure (lying face downwards)

ANTERIOR/VENTRAL POSITION

towards the head, or above / structure being more in front than another structure

toward the side of the body, or away from the midline of the body

PRONE POSITION

toward the midline of the body
