Describe the flow of blood through the heart's chambers
Blood returns to the heart via the Inferior and Superior Vena Cavae to the right atrium-->tricuspid valve-->right ventricle-->pulmonary valve-->pulmonary artery-->lungs-->pulmonary veins-->left atrium-->mitral valve-->left ventricle-->aortic valve-->aorta
Describe the location of the heart valves
tricuspid valve- between right atrium and ventricle, pulmonary valve- between right ventricle and pulmonary artery, mitral valve- between left atrium and ventricle, aortic valve- between the left ventricle and aorta
What are the functions of the papillary muscles and the chordae tendineae?
papillary muscles - attach to lower ventricular walls and to chordae tendineae which in turn attach to the AV valves. These keep the cusps of the AV valves from being inverted into the atria when the ventricles contract.
Which valves open during systole? Diastole?
systole- aortic and pulmonary open,
diastole- tricuspid and mitral valves open
What is the function of the pericardium?
protects and anchors the heart in the thorax
Name the layers of the heart from outer to inner-most layers
epicardium; myocardium; endocardium
What vessels provide blood flow from the upper and lower body into the RA?
superior and inferior vena cavae
What areas of the heart do the RCA, LAD, and circumflex arteries supply respectively?
RCA- RA, SA node,
divides into marginal (which supplied the RV) and the PDA ( which supplies the walls of both ventricles)

LAD- walls of both ventricles and anterior surface of heart

Circumflex- posterior LV and LA
What is the approximate size and weight of the heart?
Size of a fist; 7-15 ounces
List the order in which the conducting nodes fire in a healthy heart
SA node-->3 internodal pathways-->AV node-->bundle of His-->right and left bundle branches-->purkinje fibers
