Cell's major components

plasma membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, & nucleolus

Organelles

rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER)/ smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER)/ Golgi complex/ mitochondria

Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER)

protein synthesis

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SEM)

lipid synthesis & detox

Golgi complex

modifies and packages protein

mitochondria

produce ATP "powerhouse" of cell

Cilia & Flagella

both are composed of microtubules / capable of movement, continuing ATP

Cilia

are numerous and are on the surface of some body cavities (transport mucus in trachea, oocyte in the uterine tube.)

Flagella

occurs only on sperm (move back & forth)/

visible with LM

Micovilli

much smaller than cilia/ not visible with LM appears as a brush border

Micovilli

increase surface area for absorption/ small intestine/ proximal convoluted tubule of the nephron (kidney) Not motile

Tissues

groups of similar cells and extracellular matrix that carry out a common function

Tissues four types

epithelium, connective tissue, muscle, & nerve/ extracellular matrix - fibers + interstitial fluid

Characteristics of epithelia

mostly cells/ basement membrane/ avascular : no blood vessels/ polarity/ high regenerative capacity

Simple squamous epithelium

single layer of flat cells / aveoli in lungs, lining blood vessels / flatten nucleus, little cytoplasm

Simple cuboidal epithelium

single layer of cells with similar width and height / spherical nucleus/ transport secretion/ location; kidney tubules, ducts of glands

Simple columnar epithelium

single layer of tall cells / oval nucelus at basal region/ functions in secretion and absorption/ may contain cilia or microvilli/ location: digestive tract (small intestine on right uterine tubes)
