Difference between anatomy and physiology? |
Anatomy is the study of the structure of an organism. Physiology is the study of the functions an organism performs. |
What is a tissue? |
A cooporative unit of many similar cells that perform a specific function |
Where do you find epithelial tissue / epithelium? |
Where it covers body surfaces and lines internal organs and cavities |
What does epethilial tissue sit on? |
A basement membrane that sits on an underlying tissue |
How are epethilial tissues named? |
According to how many cell layers they have and shape of most of their cells |
What does simple squamous epithelium refer to? |
Simple Epethilium refers to one layer tissues epithelial tissues with 1 layers and thin floor tile like shaped cells. |
What does simple cuboidal epithelium refer to? |
One layered epithilium with cube shaped cells |
What does simple columnar epithilium refer to? |
One layered epithilium with colum shaped cells |
What is stratified squamous epethilial tissue? |
Epithelium with tile shaped cells forming multiple layers |
What defines connective tissue? |
That it is consisted of a sparse population of cells dispersed through an extracellular matrix |
What is the epidermis? |
The outer ephilium of an organism |
What is a blastula? |
The early embryonic stage whereby the embryo is just a hollow ball |
What is a glastrula? |
The early stage whithin embryonic dev. Whereby the blastula has folded inwards. |
What is the outer cell layer later called? |
Ectoderm |
What is the inner cell layer called? |
Endoderm |
What is the middle cell layer called (that form organs etc)? |
Mesoderm |
What is the def. for animals? |
Multicellular, heterotrophic eukaryotes that obtain nutrients by ingestion. |
What are cavities between your outer body wall and digestion track called? |
Coelom |
What connective tissue is a loose weave of fibers and serves as a binding and packing material (ex under skin)? |
Loose connnective tissue |
what connective tissue stores fat in fat droplets within the cells? |
Adipose tissue |
What connective tissue has a fluid as an extracellular matrix? |
Blood |
What is the strong connective tissue forming ligaments called? |
Fibrous connective tissue |
What is the connective tissue fond in "brosk called"? |
Cartilage |
What connective tissue is made up of collagen fibers embedded in calcium salts? |
Bone |
Why does blood qualify as a connective tissue? |
As scarse cells are suspended in a non-cellular matrix, which in this case is plasma. |
What 3 types of muscle tissue is there? |
Skeletal muscle(voluntary) Cardiac muscle(involuntary) Smooth muscle(involuntary) |
what is the def. for Muscle tissue? |
Tissue that is consisted of long cells called muscle fibers. |
What are the functions of nervous tissue |
Sensing stimuli Directing responses Coordinating multicellular organisms |
What are the two types of neuron extensions are there? and what are their functions? |
Dendrites, convey signals toward the cell body. Axons convey signals away from cell body (can be 1m!) |
How do neurons convey signals? |
Through the diffussion of signals between one cell to the next. |
What is an organ? |
A unit consisted of several tissues adapted to performing specific functions as a group. |
What is the blastopore? |
The first opening of the glastrula |
Difference between Protostome & Deuterstome? |
Prostome (first mouth) are organisms where mouth develops from the first opening (blastopore). Deuterstome (second mouth) are animals where the mouth develops from a second opening. |
