Colored portion of eye
Function is to control the amount of light

Iris

Hole in the iris through which light passes
Constricts in bright light, grows larger in dim light

Pupil

Transparent, living tissue
Changes shape to finely focus light rays on retina

Lens

Liquid between the lens and cornea.
Function is to provide oxygen and nutrients for the lens and cornea.

Aqueous Humor

Muscle which controls the shape of the lens

Ciliary body

Second layer of the eye, below the sclera
Function is to provide nutrients and oxygen to the retina and other portions of the eye

Choroid

Sensory layer that lines the back of the inside of the eye.
Contains light sensitive cells called rods and cones.

Retina

Center of the retina, location where fine vision occurs (reading)
Composed of mostly cone cells.

Macula

Center of the macula.
Very small area in which extremely fine vision occurs


Composed of only cone cells.

Fovea

Light sensitive cells, look like rods under a microscope. More sensitive than cones.
Enable humans to see in dim light.

Rods

Light sensitive cells, look like cones under a microscope
Enable humans to distinguish color.

Cones

The nerve that leads from the retina to the brain.

Optic Nerve

Transparent jelly-like substance filling the space behind the lens
Function is to maintain the shape of the eye.

Vitreous body

The tough, white, outer-covering of the eye.

Sclera
