Neuron

-axon: transmit signal away from cell body

-axon collateral: side branch off axon. Vary in length and diameter (up to 1m in length)

-larger diameter: larger velocity, more rapid conduction

- myelination

Neuron classifications

-multipolar

-bipolar

-unipolar

Functional classification

-afferent: sensory neuron. Transmit nerve impulse to brain or spinal cord

-efferent: motor neuron. Transmits nerve impulses away from brain to muscle/glands

-interneurons: conduct impulses from afferent neuron to motor neurons (in the CNS)

Reflex arc

- signal conduction route to and from CNS

- 3 Neuron arc

Nerves

- multilayered sheath: bundles of PNS nerve fibers held by several layer of connective tissue

-endoneurium: surround Schwann cells of nerve fibers

- fascicles: bundles of nerves. Bound by perineurium, acts like blood nerve barrier

- complete nerve: several fascicles and blood vessels held together, is by Epineurium.

-mixed nerves: nerves with mix of afferent and efferent fibers.

White and gray matter

- white matter: bundles of myelinated fiber.

-gray matter: unmyelinated fiber. Distinct gray in CNS are nuclei. Distinct gray in PNS are ganglia.

Repair of nerve fiber

-limited capacity to repair themselves
