The preganglionic neurons of the sympathetic or thoracolumbar division are in the |
lateral horns of the gray matter of the spinal cord from T1 through L2. The pre ganglion axons leave the cord via the ventral root (in conjunction with the axons of the somatic motor neurons), enter the spinal nerve and then travel briefly in the ventral rasmus. From the ventral reassume they pass through the white rasmus communicants to enter the sympathetic trunk ganglion. |

tell me about spinal nerves |
All spinal nerves are mixed nerves (both sensory and motor) The first pair leaves the vertebral canal between the base of the occiput and the atlas - all other exit via the intervertebral foramina. 1-7 emerge above the the vertebra for which they are named. C8 emerges between C7 and T1. The remaining spinal nerves emerge below the same numbered vertebrae. |
|
What do the ventral rami of spinal nerves T2 through T12 do? |
The ventral rami of spinal nerves T2 through T12 pass anteriorly as the intercostal nerves to supply the muscles of the intercostal spaces, and the skin and muscles of the anterior lateral trunk. |
|
What do all other ventral rami of spinal nerves besides those of T2- T12 do? |
The ventral rami of spinal nerves besides those of T2- T12 form plexuses. |
|
Cervical plexus |
arises from ventral rami C1 through C5 to supply the muscles of shoulders and neck. The major motor branch of this plexus is the phrenic nerve which arises from C3, C4, C5 |
|
Brachial plexus |
arises from ventral rami C5 - C8 and T1 axillary nerve- muscles and skin of shoulder Radial nerve- extensors of arm medial nerve- flexor muscles of forearm musculocutaneous- flex forearm and hand ulnar nerve- flexor carpi ulnaris and hand |
|
lumbar plexus |
ventral rami of L1- L4 Largest nerve is femoral nerve which branches into saphenous |
|
Sacral plexus |
ventral rami L4-S4 supply buttock and posterior thigh Major nerve is sciatic - largest nerve in body which divides into the common fibular nerve and the tibial nerve |
|
The autonomic nervous system consists of chains of ___ motor neurons. Tell me about these. |
The autonomic nervous system consists of chains of 2 motor neurons. The first motor neuron is called the preganglionic neuron and it resides in the brain or cord. Its axon leaves the CNS to synapse with the second motor neuron (ganglionic neuron) whose body is located in the ganglion outside the CNS. The axon of the ganglionic extends to the organ it serves. |
|
Parasympathetic or cranial division |
located in brain nuclei of cranial nerves 3, 7, 9, 10 and S2 - S4 of the spinal cord. |
|
Parasympathetic pre ganglionic neurons synapse with the ganglia located _______________. |
Parasympathetic pre ganglionic neurons synapse with the ganglia located on or close to the organs served. |
|
Preganglionic neurons of the sympathetic or thoracolumbar division are in the ________ |
Preganglionic neurons of the sympathetic or thoracolumbar division are in the lateral horns of the gray matter of the spinal cord from T1 through L2 |
