ANATOMY EXAM 3 LECTURE 24: Cardiovascular I
ANATOMY EXAM 3 LECTURE 24: Cardiovascular I
Thoracic cavity is divided into three areas:
2 pleural cavities (lateral)

Mediastinum (central)
Pericardium
Double walled sac that contains the heart and the roots of the great vessels.

Two layers: the fibrous (outer) and the serous layer.

Serous layer:
1. parietal layer: outer layer attached to the fibrous layer.
2. visceral layer: inner layer that is attached to the epicardium (layer immediately outside of the heart muscle, the myocardium).
Mediastinum
Contains:
1. heart
2. great vessels of heart
3. esophagus, trachea, aorta, vagus nerves, thymus, and lymph nodes of the central chest.

Contains ALL thoracic viscera EXCEPT the lungs.

From sternum (its front) to vertebral column (back).

Divided into two compartments:
1. Upper portion (above the pericardium): the superior region.

2. Lower portion (below the pericardium): the middle mediastinum. Divided into three regions: Anterior, middle, and posterior.
Coronary sinus
Collection of veins joined together to form a large vessel that collects blood from the myocardium of the heart.

Delivers deoxygenated blood to the Right atrium in conjunction with the superior and inferior vena cava.

The coronary sinus opens into the right atrium, between the inferior vena cava and the atrio-ventricular orifice.
Veins of the heart
1. great cardiac
2. middle cardiac
3. small cardiac
4. coronary sinus
Arteries of the heart
1. right coronary
a. marginal
b. posterior descending
2. left coronary
a. anterior descending
b. circumflex
