What is the tympanic membrane and what is its function
separates the external and middle ear. It moves in response to air vibrations that pass to it through the external acoustic meatus.
Borders of the middle ear
Roof: tegmental wall
Floor: jugular wall
Lateral wall: membranous (tympanic membrane)
Medial wall: labyrinthine
Posterior wall: mastoid
Anterior wall: carotid
Contents of middle ear
ossicles, stapdius and tensor tympani mm, chorda tympani N (VII), tympanic plexus of nerves
what nerves are found in the middle ear?
chorda tympani N, lesser petrosal nerve, tympanic nerve (from IX) to form tympanic plexus
Function of pharyngotympanic/eustachia/ auditory tube
Tube from middle ear to pharyn that allows pressure to be equalized in middle ear with atmospheric air... and thus allowing free movement of tympanic membrane
Tensory tympani fxt and innervation
inserts onto the malleus, pulls it medially, tensing the tympnaic membrane and reducing amplitude of oscillations. Protective measure for loud sounds. V3
Stapedius fxt and innervation
Prevents excessive movt of stapes. CN VII
three ossicles in order and what they attach to
malleus to incus to stapes
Malleus attatches to tympanic membrane
Stapes attatches to oval windown on Labyrinthine (medial) wall
