Coronal (Frontal) Plane

vertical plane (parallel to shoulders), divides body into anterior (front) and Posterior (back)

Transverse Plane (cross-sectional/horizontal)

perpendicular plane (through waist, flat) along the long axis of body or organ. Separates into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.

Midsagittal (median) Plane

extends through the body vertically (front to back) and divides the structure into left and right halves.

Sagittal plane

A plane that is left or right of and parallel to the midsagittal plane. Divides into left and right portions that may or may not be equal.

Oblique plane

passes through the specimen at an angle.

Anterior

in front of; toward the front surface

Posterior

In back of; toward the back surface

Dorsal

At the back side of the human body

Ventral

At the belly side of the human body

Superior

Closer to the head

Inferior

Closer to the feet

Caudal

At the rear or tail end

Cranial

At the head end

Rostral

Toward the nose

Medial

toward the midline of the body

Lateral

Away from the midline of the body

Deep

On the inside, underneath another structure

Superficial

On the outside

Proximal

Closest to point of attachment to trunk

(ex. elbow is proximal to hand)

Distal

Furthest from point of attachment to trunk

(ex. hand is distal to the elbow)

region inferior to the thorax (chest) and superior to hip bones

contains the pericardial cavity, thymus, trachea, esophagus and major blood vessels

pericardial cavity

contains the heart

pleural

contains the lungs

abdominopelvic cavity

composed of two parts; the abdominal and pelvic cavities

abdominal cavity

bordered superiorly by the diaphragm and inferiorly by a horizontal plane between the superior ridges of the hip bones. Associated with abdominal viscera, including somach, spleen, liver, pancreas, small intestine, most of large intestine, kidneys and ureters

pelvic cavity

between hip bones and interior to a horizontal plane between the superior ridges of the hip bones. Associted with the pelvic viscera, including urinary bladder, and urethra, internal reproductive organs and some of the large intestine.

Peritoneum

serous membrane surrounding abdominal and pelvic cavities

serous membrane

lines of cavities with two thin layers

Parietal layer

outer layer of serous membrane, lines internal surface of the body wall

visceral layer

inner layer of serous membrane, covers the external surface of organs
