List the five types of blood vessels in order from the heart to the back of the heart.
Arteries, arterioles, capilaries, venules, veins
Define vasodilation
When muscles relax and the diameter of the vessels increase.
Define vasoconstricion
Impulses traveling on vasomotor fibers cause muscles to contract and reduce diameter of vessels.
Describe the composition of veins.
Has all three tunics but walls are thinner and contain less smooth muscle and elastic fibers than arteries. Externa is thickest layer.
What are the smallest blood vessels and describe their composition.
capillaries, their walls are composed of a single layer of endothelium.
Fenestrated capillaries
contain numerous pores (fenestrations). Absorbs nutrients, movement of hormones and filtration.
Continuous capillaries
continuous- most common and are abundant in skin and muscles.
Capillary beds.
highly branched networks composed of venticular shunts and true capillaries.
State the function of capillaries and state the mechanisms of exchange.
Main exchange by diffusion. Also by osmosis and filtration. Interchange substaces b/t blood and tissue cells.
Describe the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the capillaries.
Oxygen- diffuse out of blood into tissue cells. Carbon dioxide- diffuse from tissues into blood of capillaries.
