What does the Human Integumenarty system consist of? |
Skin, glands, hair, and nails. |
What are the functions of the IS |
1. Protection
2. Regulation of body temperature 3. Vitamin D synthesis 4. Sensation 5. Waste removal |
What are the 3 main layers of the skin (superficial to deep) |
Epidermis, Dermis and Hypodermis |
What are the layers of the Epidermis (superfical to deep) |
Corneum Lucidum Granulosum Spinosum Basale |
What are the sections of the dermis and their function? |
1. Papillary layer- Binds the dermis to the epidermis 2. Deeper reticular layer- connects the underlaying subcutaneous |
Two types of epidermis? |
Thick- on palms and feet, has 5 layers composed of dead keratinocytes (extra lucidum layer) Thin- only has 4 ( no lucidum layer) |
Explain the papillary layer |
Made of looseareolar connective tissue that contain fiberblast, collagen, reticular fibres and eslatin fibers |
Explain Deeper region layer- |
Attaches the the subcutaneous layer, dense irregular connective tissue containing bundles of collagen and coarse elastic fibers |
Skin colour is due to the pigments |
melanin, hemoglobin and carotene |
Melanin |
black-brown pigment |
Hemoglobin |
carries oxygen in rbc, looks reddish |
Carotene |
the orange-yellowish pigment |
What are glands |
single or groups of epithelial cells that secrete a substance |
Define the Sebaceous Glands |
oil glands, produce sebum that keep hair from drying out, prevents excessive evaporation of water from the skin, keeps skin soft and inhabits the growth of certain bacteria |
Define the Sudoriferous Glands |
They are sweat glands, the two types are: 1. Eccrine- main function to help regulate body temperature ( on palms, forehead, soles) 2. Apocrine- Open into hair follicles, and function during puberty, stimulated by emotional stress, and sexual excitement |
Define Ceruminous Glands |
Present in the outer ear canal, combines secretion of the ceruminous and sebaceous glands in a yellowish secretion ( earwax ) Provides a sticky barrier for protection Waterproof preventing infection from entering the cells. |
What are the types of skin cancer and where does it occur in the skin? |
1. Basal cell carcinoma- originates in the basal cells (most common) 2.Squamous cell carcinoma - originates in the keratinocytes of the spinosum layer. (exsessive sun exporsure 3. Melanoma- uncontrollable growth of pigment |
What are the early warning signs of skin cancer? |
A: asymmetrical B: borders are irregular C: colour is dark, and inconsistent D: diameter is larger than 6mm E: Evolves over time |
What layers are burns consider first, secound and third |
First degree burns are in the epidermis layer. (superficial ) Secound are burns that reach the epidermis and the dermis layers. (partial thickness) Third degrees burns are the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous layers. (full thickness burn) |
