Plasma Membrane
(Cell Membrane)
Structure: double layer of fats w/ protein in the cell membrane.
selectively permeable (something can go through it)
Functions: passive transport(no energy)=diffusion, active transport(energy required)=exocytosis, endocytosis
Microvilli
In plasma membrane...helps increase surface area
Cilia
In plasma membrane...motile, moves substances over the surface of stationary cells
Flagellum
(sperm) In plasma membrane...motile, whip-like structure that moves cells
Diffusion
some SMALL materials may diffuse/pass through the cell membrane on their own.
Exocytosis
(secretion) process by which cellular materials exit the cell
Endocytosis
process by which materials are brought into a cell
Mitochondria
makes ATP (adenosine triphosphate, energy molecules)
Ribosomes
involved in protein synthesis
two-kinds: free ribosomes and ribosomes attached to ER
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
a network of tubules used to transport and synthesize (produce) materials
Rough ER
has ribosomes on walls...transports proteins made by ribosomes
Smooth ER
has no ribosomes...synthesis lipids, mainly steroids(groups of lipids), and detoxify drugs and alcohol (liver)
Golgi Apparatus
several C-shaped sacs near the nucleus, packages materials for secretion, forms lysosomes
Lysosomes
contain digestive enzymes
Centrioles
involved in cell divison, produce mitotic spindles
