Skin is thicker in what animals?
Where is it thickest?
Ungulates thicker than dogs, bovine thicker than equine.

Extensor surfaces of libs, lateral surfaces of trunk (parts that face environment)
Adipose tissue is here and it's firmer and less mobile

What species is this used to measure carcass quality?

Where are fat deposits in subcutis in stallions, zebu (bos indicus) cattle and sheep?
subcutis / superficial fascia / hypodermis
panniculus adiposus. Thickness of fat measures CQ in pigs

Crest of neck in stallion, in hump of zebu (Bos indicus) breeds of cattle, tails of fat-tailed sheep
Areas of major skin thicknesses (Bovine, pigs, horse)?
Dewlap of bovine, ventral surfaces of the neck of pigs (since they’re routers), dorsal surface of the tail of the horse.
Wattles or tassels (appendices colli) are on what species? What are they?
Skin derivative, usually in the goat (rarely in sheep and pig).
Are elongated, narrow (about 15 cm long) cartilage bar-containing skin derivatives
Project vertically, caudal to the angle of the jaw
Cutaneous sinuses/pouches are what?

Species that has Infraorbital sinus? Where?
Skin derivatives. Diverticula or out-pocketing of skin; glands in their walls.

Sheep- lies rostral to the eyes, waxy, straw-colored secretion
Sheep skin derivatives (
Infraorbital sinus

Inguinal sinus is where

mammary gland

Horn glands (also goat)

Preputial glands (all species)

Interdigital sinus
Inguinal sinus is where?

mammary gland?

Interdigital sinus?

This is all still what species?
on either side of the scrotum or

shallow; secretions stain hairs and skin of the area. modified sweat glands. All mammals. Mamma has mammary glands. derived from skin (symp nerv system. NOT para)

all four limbs; curved tube at about proximal interphalangeal joint. Waxy, but colorless secretions

Sheeeeep skin derivatives
Location and species?:
Horn glands

Caudal (coccygeal) glands.

Subcaudal glands:

Preputial glands

Mammary (mamma) glands:
goat/sheep. Caudal part of the horn.

Carnivores – dorsal aspect of the root of the tail.

goat; two glands under the base of the tail. Buck taint?

All species

Modified sweat glands. All mammals. Mamma has mammary glands. derived from skin (symp nerv system. NOT para)

Skin derivatives
3 groups of Foot pads, 5 names total (varies w/ species).
digital pads (tori digitalis) – distal ends of digits; hoof pads or bulbs

Metacarpal and metatarsal pads (tori metacarpeus, metatarseus)

Carpal and tarsal pads (tori carpeus. tarseus).

Skin derivative
Horns (cornua) developes from?

Process is covered by?
Develop from the cornual process of the frontal bone

process is covered by cornual dermis, at the base of the horn.
It's a skin derivative
What farm animal has no ligamentum nuchae?
Piggyyyyyyy
The ligamentum nuchae: similar to equine. Differs from that of the horse, as follows :

(A). The laminar portion is divided into cranial and caudal parts;

cranial part is paired and extends from the funicular part to the spines of C2 and C3;

caudal part is unpaired, and extends from the spinous process of T1 to the spinous processes of C4 – C7.

(B). The funicular part in the ox extends well into the thoracic region, and slants ventrolaterally over the summits of the spinous processes (therefore friction over spine summits is not as great in the ox as in horse).
