what does proximal mean ?

what does distal mean ?
proximal means when something is closer to a reference point

distal means when something is further away from a reference point

for example- the elbow is proximal and the wrist is distal in terms of the shoulder joint
what is medial ?

what is lateral ?
medial is describing a body part that is towards the midline of the body e.g the big toe and little finger are medial

lateral is describing a body part as being away from the midline e.g the thumb and the little toe would be lateral

anterior is describing something that is on the front of the body e.g the quadriceps is anterior because it's on the front of the thigh

posterior is describing something that is on the back of the body e.g the hamstrings are posterior because they are on the back of the thigh

superior is describing a part of the body that is above a particular reference point e.g the head would be superior to the trunk

inferior is describing a part of the body that is below a particular reference point e.g the thigh is inferior to the trunk because in is below it.

superficial is describing a part of the body that is close to the surface of the body (external)

deep is describing a part of the body that is far away from the surface of the body (internal

for example the ribs would be superficial to the heart but the ribs would be deep to the pectoral muscles

flexion is describe as the bending movement in which the relative angle of the joint between two adjacent segments decreases.

extension is the straightening movement in which the relative angle of the joint between two adjacent segments increases.

abduction is the movement of a part of the body away from the midline e.g raising or arm or leg to the side

adduction is the movement that brings that part of the body back towards the midline e.g bringing your arm towards your trunk

elevation is the movement of part of the body in a upwards motion e.g shrugging your shoulders

depression is the movement of part of the body that is lowered e.g lowering your scapula

protraction is the movement of the scapula moving apart so bringing your shoulders forward

retraction is the movement of the scapulae moving towards one another, so moving your shoulders back
what is pronation ?

pronation is the movement of the forearm which rotates the palm downwards

supination is the movement of the forearm which rotates the palm upwards
