Describe the Anatomical Position

Stand Upright,

Head and gaze directed forwards,

Palms facing forwards,

Lower limbs close together with feet parallel

What does Superior/Cephalic mean?

Structures that are closer to the top of the

Cranium/Skull

What does Inferior/Caudal mean?
Structures that are nearer to the sole of the feet.

What are the different Anatomical Planes?
Median Sagittal Plane, Coronal/Frontal Plane, Axial/Transverse Plane, Para-sagittal Plane
Vertical plane passing longitudinally through centre of the body. Vertical plane passing through the body at right angles to m, right angles to m and f.
What is the difference between Anterior and Posterior?

Anterior/Ventral: Structures towards the front of the body.

Posterior/Dorsal: Structures towards the back of the body.

What is the difference between Medial and Lateral?
Structures towards the sagittal plane are medial. Those that are further away are lateral.

What is the difference between Proximal and Distal?
Proximal means close to the attachment of a limb, Distal is further away from a limb attachment.

What is the difference between Flexion and

Extension?

Flexion: Moving a joint so the angle between bone decreases. (Usually in anterior direction)

Extension: Straightening a joint so the angle between bones increases.

What is the difference between Abduction and Adduction? (Occur only in frontal plane)

What is the exception?

Abduction: moving the body from the median plane

Adduction: moving body towards the median plane. (Exception: digits; use middle finger and 2nd toe instead of median plane)

What is the difference between Pronation and Supination?

Pronation: rotating forearm so palms face downwards.

Supination: rotating forearm so palms face upwards.

They both involve rotational movements in the forearm and hand. Sup=up
What is the difference between Ipsilateral and Contralateral?
Ipsilateral: When structures are on the same side.Contralateral: When structures are on the opposite side.
