35 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
  • 3rd side (hint)
Allopurinol
Agents used in gout and hyperuricaemia
Reduction of urate/ uric acid formation in conditions where deposition has occurred or is predicted eg gout, uric acid lithiasis
Amiodarone
Antiarrhythmic agent s
Severe tachyarrhythmias unresponsive to other therapy; initiate treatment in hospital
Amitriptyline
Antidepressants
Major depression
Amlodipine (Norvasc)
Antihypertensive agents
Dihydropyridine Ca channel blocker. Hypertension; angina (chronic stable); alone or as part of combination therapy
Amoxycillin
Penicillins
Amoxycillin is similar to ampicillin in its bactericidal action against Gram positive and Gram negative susceptible organisms during the stage of active multiplication. It acts through the inhibition of biosynthesis of the cell wall mucopeptide.
Augmentin Duo Forte
Penicillins
Penicillin + beta-lactamase inhibitor, broad spectrum. Short-term treatment of bacterial infections due to susceptible organisms
Asprin
Simple analgesics and antipyretics/ anticoagulants, antithrombotics
Analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory/ antithrombotic/ platelet aggregation inhibitor
Asasantin
Anticoagulants, antithrombotics
Antithrombotic/ platelet aggregation inhibitor
Atenolol (Noten)
Beta-adrenergic blocking agents
Cardioselective beta 1 -blocker. Hypertension, all grades incl. renal origin; frequent disabling angina without evidence of cardiac failure; cardiac arrhythmias; MI
Atorvastatin (LIpitor)
Hypolipidaemic agents
HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. Adjunct to diet in treatment of hypercholesterolaemia; nonfatal MI, stroke risk reduction in hypertensive patients with multiple CHD risks
Calcitriol
Agents affecting calcium and bone metabolism
Calcitriol is a man-made active form of vitamin D
Caltrate
Minerals
Calcium
Cephalexin
Cephalosporins
Cephalexin belongs to a class of antibiotics called cephalosporins. They are similar to penicillin in action and side effects. They stop or slow the growth of bacterial cells by preventing bacteria from forming the cell wall that surrounds each cell
Clopidogrel
Anticoagulants, antithrombotics
Platelet aggregation inhibitor. Prevention of vascular ischaemia assoc with atherothrombotic events (MI, stroke, vascular death) in patients with a history of symptomatic atherosclerotic disease
Dexamethasone
Adrenal steroid hormones
Dexamethasone is a synthetic (man-made) corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are naturally-occurring chemicals produced by the adrenal glands located above the kidneys. Corticosteroids affect the function of many cells within the body and suppress the immune system. Corticosteroids also block inflammation and are used in a wide variety of inflammatory diseases affecting many organs.
Diamicron
Hypoglycaemic agents
Type II diabetes not controlled by diet alone
Mirtazapine
Antidepressants
Major depression treatment incl relapse prevention
Omeprazole
Hyperacidity, reflux and ulcers
Proton pump inhibitors block the production of acid by the stomach
Ostelin (Vitamin D)
Minerals
Vitamin D supplement
Paracetamol
Simple analgesics and antipyretics
Pain relief (headache, arthritis, muscular, neuralgic), fever reduction
Panadeine
Combination simple analgesics
Analgesic, antipyretic
Perindopril
Antihypertensive agents
ACE inhibitor. Hypertension, heart failure
Phenytoin
Anticonvulsants
Hydantoin anticonvulsant. Control of grand mal, psychomotor seizures; seizure prophylaxis in neurosurgery; treatment of certain cardiac arrhythmias
Potassium
Minneral (electrolyte)
Potassium preparations are used for supplementing potassium in order to treat or prevent low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalemia). Potassium is a major mineral (electrolyte) that is important for the function of every cell in the body. For example, it is important in nerve conduction, muscle contraction, and kidney function. Normal daily dietary intake of potassium is 40-150 mEq. Potassium deficiency occurs when potassium loss exceeds intake. Potassium depletion may be caused by excessive vomiting or diarrhea, diabetic ketoacidosis, diuretics [for example, furosemide (Lasix)], starvation and rare disorders of the adrenal glands. Potassium deficiency causes weakness, fatigue, heart rhythm problems, paralysis, and kidney dysfunction.
Prednisolone
Adrenal steroid hormones
Prednisolone is a synthetic adrenal corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are natural substances produced by the adrenal glands located adjacent to the kidneys. Corticosteroids have potent anti-inflammatory properties, and are used in a wide variety of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, colitis, asthma, bronchitis, certain skin rashes, and allergic or inflammatory conditions of the nose and eyes
Promethazine
Antiemetics, antinauseants
Prevention, treatment of motion sickness, nausea, vomiting
Ramipril
Antihypertensive agents
ACE inhibitor. Hypertension
Ranitidine
Hyperacidity, reflux and ulcers
H 2 -receptor antagonist. Symptomatic relief of heartburn, acid indigestion due to gastroesophageal reflux
Resprim Forte
Other antibiotics and anti-infectives
Infections due to susceptible organisms
Roxithromycin
Macrolides
Mild-mod severe infections due to susceptible organisms
Digoxin
Cardiac inotropic agents
Cardiac glycoside. CHF; AF; paroxysmal atrial tachycardia
Coloxyl & Senna
Laxatives
Faecal softener with peristaltic stimulant
Ferrous Sulphate
