Alfred Thayer Mahan
Alfred Thayer Mahan was a naval strategist who believed that a strong navy was the key to national power. Mahan's strategies were extremely successful as seen in the Spanish-American War that took place in 1898. Our Navy won with hardly any damages due to our strong navy as emphasized by Mahan.

Triangle Fire
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire occured in New York City on March 25th, 1911. Over 146 women died from burning in the fire, or from jumping off of the ninth and tenth stories of the building. Because of this tragic event, Francis Perkins revealed the horrible working conditions to politicians in order to bring about change. The State limited working hours for women to 54 hours per week and prohibited children under the age of 14 from working.
The Fourteen Points
The Fourteen Points was a speech that President Woodrow Wilson spoke during the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. Once the Paris Peace Conference was over, Wilson took the Treaty of Versailles back to congress to get it approved. Unfortunately, congress didn't approve of the treaty, and the United States never became a part of the League of Nations.
League of Nations
The League of Nations was an orginazation that was formed in 1934 because of the Treaty of Versailles. The League's main goal was to attain and maintain peace throughout the world. The League of Nations only lasted for about one year, and then it ended.
Scopes Trial
The Scopes Trial, or the Scopes Monkey Trial, began in Tennisee in 1925, when John Scopes, a biology teacher, broke the law and was put on trial. John Scopes was guilty of breaking the Butler Act which made it against the law to teach anything that is contrary to Creationism. Scopes was innevitibley pronounced guilty.
The Battle of the Marne
The Battle of the Marne was really split up into two seperate battles. The battles took place inbetween the French and the German armies. The first Battle of the Marn took place from September 5th through the 12th in 1914. This set up World War 1 for Trench warfare. Next, the Second Battle of the Marne took place on July 15th and ended on August 6th in the year of 1918.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Archduke Franz Ferdinand is the real reason for World War 1. World War 1 began because of his assassination. He was killed on June 28th in 1914. He was a heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. Since there are a ton of monarchies in that area, everyone basically got really ticked off and the anger spread causing war, then eventually world war.
Stock Market Crash
The Stock Market Crash could refer to multiple crashes in the past one hundred years, but the one we are referring to is the Stock Market Crash of 1929. The crash was caused when the market lost 31 points and people freaked out, frantically selling their stock all at once. The day when people started to sell their stock is known as Black Thursday. By mid November, the market plummeted down to 224.
