What was Ft Caroline?

A settlement which was occupied by a few hundred French Protestants. France's first colonists in the new world and the true first pilgrims of America.

When did the Spanish attacked the French?

September 20, 1565 at night during a storm.

What was the results of the Battle?

It lasted less than an hour as they were easily overwhelmed. 132 soldiers and civilians were killed and only one soldier on the Spanish side was injured.

What happened to the surviving French people?

The French men were hanged and the women and children were taken to Puerto Rico

Why was Ft Caroline attacked?

Pedro Menendez thought they were Lutherans but they were actually Mugenots (French Protestants)

Why was it so easy for Ft Caroline to be attacked?

Because Jean Ribault (one of their leaders) sailed off with 600 other men on the ship Trinite because they wanted to attack the spanish

Why didn't Jean Ribault didn't get to the Spanish?

They were devastated by the hurricane

What happened to Jean Ribault and his men?

The surviving were outed by the natives and captured by the spanish. The ones who didn't convert to Christianity were put to death
