1st Naturalization act

1790- any free white can get citizenship after 3 years of residency in America

Treaty of Guadeloupe- Hildago was to end the Mexican-American war. Americareceived the land that made up the southwest. The people living in this areabecame American citizens.

Chinese exclusion act- 1st american immigration law based on race, many Chinese immigrants were forced to leave. all except students, diplomats, and merchants

1917- the Peuerto Riccans Ricans can get American citixenship

Immigration Restriction Act- only 3% can come to United states from the 1910

National Origins Act- restricted immigration to 2% of immigrants from 1890

1942-1964

Bacero Program- temporary work visa for Hispanics

Magnuson Act- Allowed Chinese to immigrate to America again and be on the path towards immigration

1945

War Brides Act- allows spouses of soldiers to become US citizens

1948

Displaced Persons act- United states gave refuge to European citizenship to stay on us soil until the communism is over

1949

Operation paper clip begins- doctors and scientist are brought to america from Nazi Germany to help with cold war

1952

immigration and Nationality Act (Mccarran-Walter Act)- continues quota act but ends restriction on asian migration

1953

due to fear of communism, refuge camps were created

1965

Hart-cellar Act (immigration act of 1965)- current law that abolished quota/national origins act

1980

Cubans can receive permanent residence status in the UnitedStates and can eventually get citizenship. Some immigrants were given financial aid.

Mariel Boat lift- 125,000 illegal immigrants from cuba came to the united states

Refugee Act of 1980- refugees can stay in america and not have to return to the room

1986

immigration reform and control act- It was an amnesty program where immigrants could get theircitizenship after a certain amount of years. With this act illegal immigrantswere restricted. Employers had to confirm that they did not hire illegalimmigrants knowingly.

Temporary protective Status

Protects people that cannot return to their national country due to civil war or natrual disaster

1992

North American Free Trade Agreement- more people were hired and more money was given to protect the boarder

Patirot Act- giving up some freedom to be safe- can track what you do to protect from terroists
