Aaron Burr:
he was a very unpopular vice president. He killed his political rival, Alexander Hamilton, in a duel. Then he tried to pull together a revolution to secede from America.
Andrew Jackson:
7th president of the United States. Was re-elected to a 2nd term. One of our most powerful and forceful presidents. Nickname “Old Hickory”
Boston Massacre
March 5, 1770. Startedwith a snowball fight. Angry crowd gathered harassing the British soldiers. Unknownperson gave orders for soldiers to fire. 5 killed including a 12 year old boy
Carpetbagger
Northern politiciansthat went South after the war, carrying their belongings in a carpet bag, totake advantage of political opportunity.
Dred Scott:
He was a slave that had been takenfrom a slave state (Missouri) to the free state of Illinois and then to thefree territory of Wisconsin. He and his owner returned to Missouri. His ownerdied and Dred Scott sued for his freedom, claiming that since he had lived in afree state then he should be free. The Supreme Court found against him.
Abraham Lincoln:
He served a term in the House of Representatives. Joined the RepublicanParty in 1856. As a Whig candidate he served 4 terms in the state legislatureand one term in the U.S. Congress. Self educated and well liked. Nicknamed “HonestAbe.” He was nominated for President by the Republican party in 1860 and waselected President. He is credited with saving the Union. SC and other statesdecided to succeed from the Union after he was elected.
Andrew Johnson:
Hesucceeds President Lincoln after President Lincoln was killed. He was not aspowerful of a leader
Boston Tea Party:
East India Company was given themonopoly to sell tea in the colonies. Americans refused to buy it. December 16,1773 – dumped a load of tea into Boston Harbor during the night dressed asIndians.
Conquistadors:
Spanish conquerors. The Spanish Conquistadors came west with great armies to conquer the Indians. It became a crusade against the Indians
Eli Whitney:

Alamo:
One of the mostheroic and best remembered battles of the war (Texas Revolution). 200 Texansdefended a fortified mission called the Alamo at San Antonio. The 200 Texanswere fighting 3000 Mexican troops. They held the Alamo for 2 weeks before theywere all mercilessly killed. “Remember the Alamo” became the battle cry of theTexans.
Appomattox:
Ending the civil war, Gen. Lee surrenderedto Gen. Grant in the village of Appomattox Court House in Virginia to discussterms of surrender. Gen. Grant was very generous in the terms for thesurrender. He treated Gen. Lee with respect and both men departed in dignity.
Burr Conspiracy:
Aaron burr tried to secede from America and form his own country to create a Western empire using Louisiana Territory, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Mexico. He was captured before he could bring his army to battle. He was tried but not enough evidence to convict him of treason.
Delaware River:
Gen. George Washington led his troops across this river with the Continental Army.
Forty-niners:
These were thousands of gold seekers thatdescended on northern California and started the gold rush in 1849.Very few becamerich.
First Constitutional Congress:
This was after the union of the states and itset up their government, ect.
Francis Scott Key:
He is the man who wrote the StarSpangled Banner. Hewas a prominent Washington lawyer who went to Baltimore to rescue a friend capturedat Washington. He was there to negotiate his friend’s release but held therewhile Britain attacked Fort McHenry. He work the poem the Star Spangled Bannerduring this time. It was set to music and in 1931, it officially becameAmerica’s national anthem.
Fort Sumter:
Start of the Civil War. A Union fort in Charleston, SC. Was surrendered to the Confederacy in April, 1861. This was the start of the Civil War.
George III:
King of England in 1760.Vowed to bring the Colonies into subjection
George Washington:
He was the firstpresident of the U.S. GeorgeWashington was a 21 yr old surveyor and a major in the Virginia militia. Hehead many other positions including Commander and Chief of the SecondContinental army.
