Political ideology that favored not becoming entangled with European powers, either as friend or foe, but did favor robust trade relations with a variety of partners.
Isolationism
Ideology of James Monroe in which any aggressive move by a European power in the Western Hemisphere would be regarded as a challenge and affront to the United States
Monroe Doctrine
An approach to foreign policy that places the value and interests of one's own country above that of others. Unlike individual self-interest that promotes cooperation and exchange in a market, national self-interest tends to be aggressive and destructive.
National Self-interest
The belief that American expansion of an "Empire of Liberty" through the Western Hemisphere was justified by the benefits of bringing the American way of life to acquired territories.
Manifest Destiny
An aggressive style of bragging by European governments that helped bring about WWI.
Jingoism
The armed stalemate of the United States with the Soviet Union during the latter half of the 20th Century; it was portrayed as a war of freedom v. tyranny, democracy v. totalitarianism, capitalism v. communism
