Popular Sovereignty |
The government draws their power from the people, and the people have given the power the to government. The people are the only source for any and all governmental power. |

Limited Government |
No government is all-powerful, that government may do only those things that the people have given it the power to do. Government must obey the law as well as its people. |

Separation of Powers |
The powers are distributed among 3 distinct and independent branches of the government. It is used today in the US government by splitting the Judicial Branch, Executive Branch, and Legislative Branch. |

Checks and Balances |
Each branch is subject to a number of constitutional restraints (checks) by the other branches. Each branch has certain powers with which it can check the operations of the other two. |

Judicial Review |
The power of courts to determine whether what government does is in accord with what the constitution provides. Has the power to declare unconstitutional. |

Federalism |
The division of power among a central government and several regional governments. They constructed the federal arrangements, with its division of powers, as a compromise. |
