|

All male citizens are granted the right to vote regardless of race, color, etc. It originally included females, but was changed at the last minute to get out of congress. Frederick Douglass told them to take out women and they hated him after that.

|
Power to lay and collect income taxes. Direct tax-a tax based on value of land, as opposed to one based on privileges or uses

|
direct election of senators. Governor may make temporary appointment.

18th Amendment
|
Prohibition. Women played a major role. Congress passed Volstead Act to enforce Prohibition: banned consumption of beer & wine. Opponents of prohibition were called wets and supporters were drys.

19th Amendment
|
The right to vote shall not be denied due to sex. TN provided approval by one vote. After Independence, women could vote in NJ, but they later refused them. Woodrow Wilson was slow to convert. Warren G. Harding won the first presidential election in which women voted nationwide.

Lame Ducks. Presidency ends 1/20 @ noon. 3/4 was the old date. H. of R.'s chooses among the top 3 candidates for pres. if no majority. Senate chooses among top 2 for vice

|
Repeals Prohibition. Utah was the deciding state. Utah makes it required for liquor to have only 3.2% alcohol.

Presidential term limits. 10 yrs. is the max. Did not apply to Harry Truman

Electoral votes for D.C. Only WY had smaller pop. They get 3 electoral votes.

|
Banning the Poll tax. Mostly for blacks. Head taxes that could be used to prevent blacks from voting. L.B. Johnson passed voting rights act of 1969 which gave them the right to sue if denied and jailtime. G.W.B. renewed it for 25 yrs.

25th Amendment
|
Presidential succession & disability. V.P. has been vacant 18 times. Before, president had died in office 8 times. Spiro Agnew resigned Vice Presidency and was 2nd V.P. to ever resign. Ford & Rockefeller were the first presidency that wasn't chosen by voters.

26th Amendment
|
Suffrage for young people. 18+ citizens shall not be denied voting rights if they are old enough to be drafted. Fastest ratified amendment.

27th Amendment
|
Written by James Madison. Limiting Congressional pay raises. Longest ratification in U.S. history. Greg Watson wrote a paper saying the amendment could still be ratified because it didn't have an experation date.
