What were some Black Codes?
Vagrancy Laws- Freedmen convicted of vagrancy (not working) could be fined, whipped, or sold for a year's labor.
Curfew- Generally, black people could not gather after sunset.
Labor Contracts- Freedmen had to sign agreements in January for a year of work. Those who quit in the middle of a contract often lost all wages they had earned.
Land Restrictions- Freed people could rent land or homes only in rural areas. This restriction forced them to live on plantations.
What is a carpetbagger?
A carpetbagger is a Northern republican that moved south after the civil war. They did so because they wanted to earn some money from southern misery.
What is a scalawag?
A white, southern, Republican. Some were former whigs who had opposed secession. Many were poor, but not all.

How were Radical Republicans and Moderate Republicans similar in beliefs at this time? How did they differ?
Similarities: They both opposed Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction Plan, opposed the spread of black codes, and favored the expansion of republicans in the south.
Difference: The moderates were less enthusiastic when it came to the Radical's goal of granting African Americans civil rights
Andrew Johnson continued to oppose equal rights for African Americans. In the 1866 congressional elections, he gave speeches urging states not to ratify the fourteenth amendment. How did the angry northerners respond to this action?
The northerners responded to this by putting Radical Republicans into Congress so they could come up with their own reconstruction plan and put it into action.
Congress passed the reconstruction act of 1867, what were some of its key provisions?
1. It put the south under military rule, dividing it into five districts, each governed by a different northern general.
2. It ordered southern states to hold new elections for delegates to create new state constitutions.
3. It required states to allow all qualified male voters, including African Americans, to vote in the elections.
4.It temporarily barred those who had supported the Confederacy from voting.
5. It required southern states to guarantee equal rights to all citizens.
6. It required the states to ratify the fourteenth amendment.

It placed limits on the President's power to fire and hire government officials. Under Constitution, the President must seek Senate approval for candidates to fill certain jobs, such as Cabinet posts. This act came into account when Johnson fired Edwin Stanton. The act also demanded that the Senate approve the firing of the officials as well.

To charge him with wrongdoing in office.
