Exogen - Expulsion of club hair
Hair cycle varies according to what components?
Species
Breed
Body site
Type of Hair

influenced by many systemic factors but mostly by locally directed activities
What is synchronous shedding?
wave-like shedding seen in retrievers
What is mosaic shedding?
asynchonous shedding where each follicle is at a different stage
What are the two different hair types?
primary - guard compound hair where there are 3-5 hairs per follicle

secondary - down undercoat where there are about 2 -15 follicles per unit (dogs) 10 - 20 follicles per unit (cats)
What are the two types of alopecia?
puritic and non puritic
What are types of puritic alopecia?
allergic

parasitic

infectious
What are types of non-puritic alopecia?
inflammatory - usually multifocal lesion affecting limbs and face

Non-inflammatory - usually diffuse lesion affect trunk area
What are some examples of non-puritic alopecia?
Dystophy/dysplasia like in color dilution alopecia or black hair follicle dysplasia

Hair cycle arrest like in endocrine and endocrine look-alike disorders

Alopecia X, post clipping alopecia, telogen anagen defluxion, breed related alopecia
What are some examples of puritic alopecia?
Sebaceous adenitis
Alopecia areta
Pseudopalade
Dermatomyositis
Vasculitis
Leishmaniosis
What are some clues for non-inflammatory non-puritic alopecia?
Systemic disease - hypothyroid/hypercortisism

Breed - alopecia X, congenital, color dilution

Coat color - color dilution/ black hair color dysplasia

Age - (juvenile) congenital hypotricosis (young) alopecia X, pattern baldness, color dilution (old) hypothyroidism, hypercortisism

Sexual status - gonadal sex hormone imbalances
What are diagnostic procedures for inflammatory non-puritic alopecia?
For pyoderma, dermatophytes and demodex use skin scrapings, cytology DTM culture or biopsy
What are diagnostic procedure for non-imflammatory non-puritic alopecia?
CBC
Chem Panel
UA
Specific tests
biopsy
