Le superlatif |
In French, the superlative forms are the same as the comparative forms plus, moins, meilleur, and mieux, except that the definite article le, la, or les is added. |
le superlatif (adj. gender agreement)
In the case of adjectives, the article agrees with the noun: l'étudiante la plus avancée.
le superlatif (nouns)
In the case of nouns, the superlative form acts like an expression of quantity (le plus de temps libre). Notice that the French equivilant of in or of after a superlative is de. |
le superlatif (article placement)
If an adjective follows the noun it qualifies, the superlative form repeats the definite artivle: la maison la plus solide, le livre le plus ennuyeux, les moins travailleurs. If an adjective comes before the noun, only one definite article is required: la plus jolie maison, adjectives are places before the noun: (bags) grand, vieux, bon, long, beau, autre, petit, nouveau, mauvais, joli, jeune.
