sum

The result of adding two or more numbers.

difference

The result of subtracting one number from another. How much one number differs from another.

product

The answer when two or more numbers are multiplied together.

quotient

The answer after you divide one number by another.

equation

An equation says that two things are equal. It will have an equals sign "="

inequality

An inequality says that two values are not equal.

balance

When both sides have the same quantity or mass.

variable

A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y.

coefficient

A number used to multiply a variable.

term

In Algebra a term is either a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together.

expression

Numbers, symbols and operators (such as + and ×) grouped together that show the value of something.

slope

How steep a straight line is.

mean

The mean is the average of the numbers: a calculated "central" value of a set of numbers.

median

The middle number (in a sorted list of numbers).

mode

The number which appears most often in a set of numbers.

range

The difference between the lowest and highest values.

integers

A number with no fractional part.

intercepts

The x-intercept is the point where the curve crosses the x axis and the y-intercept is the point where the curve crosses the y axis.

ordinal

A number that tells the position of something in a list.

natural numbers

The whole numbers from 1 upwards: 1, 2, 3, and so on ...

function

A function is a special relationship where each input has a single output.

relation

set of ordered pairs

domain

All the values that go into a function

range

The set of all output values of a function

dependent variable

The "output" value of a function:

independent variable

An "input" value of a function:

algorithm

An Algorithm is a step-by-step solution.

It is like a cooking recipe for mathematics.

Example: one algorithm for adding two digit numbers is "add the units, add the tens and combine the answers"

addend

Any of the numbers that are added together

attribute

A property of an object or person etc.

combinations

A collection of things, in which the order does not matter

proportion

Proportion says that two ratios (or fractions) are equal

whole numbers

The numbers {0, 1, 2, 3, ...} etc.

complementary angles

Two Angles are Complementary when they add up to 90 degrees (a Right Angle).

supplementary angles

Two Angles are Supplementary when they add up to 180 degrees.

They don't have to be next to each other, just so long as the total is 180 degrees.

Pythagorean theorem

In a right angled triangle the square of the long side is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
