Variable
a letter or other symbol that represents a number or set of numbers in an expression or an equation
EX: 5k (k is the variable) |
Algebraic Expression
a mathematical combination of numbers, variables and operations
Ex: 3x-7 or m x 5n |
Sum, quantity or total. Use sum as a general rule. In word problems, you will be asked what is the total or sum. All indicate addition of numbers. (more than indicates addition as well)
the result of adding two numbers or quantities.
Ex: 5 + m |
Difference
(less than and fewer are used in words problems to indicate subtration) |
the result obtained when one number is subtracted from another
EX: 3x - 7 |
Product
(in word problems you may see the word of indicating multiplication ex: 1/3 of....) |
the result of multiplying two numbers or variables
EX: 5x=y 6(7)=42 8 x 8=64 is the ANSWER when multiplying FACTORS. |
Quotient
the result obtained from dividing one number or variable into another number or variable
EX: p/q=8 10/2=5 is the ANSWER in a division problem |
Equation
a mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal
EX: 5 + 7= 12 |
Equivalent
equal in value
EX: 8 + 2=5 + 5 |
Communtative Property for Addition and Multiplication ONLY
states that for any numbers x and y: x + y = y + x and xy=yx
EX: 4 + 5= 5 + 4 and 2(5) = 5(2) |
Associative Property for Addition and Multiplication ONLY
states that the sum or product of a set of numbers is the same no matter how the numbers are grouped. (x+y)+z=x+(y+z). EX: (3 + 4) + 5= 3 + (4 + 5) or
7x(5) = 7(5x) |
Distributive Property
multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by that number and then adding the products
EX: 2(3 + 2) = 6 + 4 and (3 + 2)2= 4 + 6 |
Equivalent Expression
expressions that always result in the same number or have the same mathematical meaning for all replacement values of the variables.
EX: 5n + 7n and 12n are the same number or express. |
Like Terms
terms that include the same variables, or base numbers raised to the same powers... like terms can be combined..kinda like putting an outfit together....
EX: 5n + 6n + 4= 11n + 4 (the Ns are like terms...) |
Order of Operations
Please Excuse My Dope Awesome Swag (or Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally) in this order: 1) Anything in Parenthesis, 2) Exponents, 3) Multiply left to right, 4) Divide left to right, 5) Add left to right , and 6) Subtract left to right
Verbal Expression
Translating algebraic expressions into words.
EX: 6x + 4= The sum of the product of six and x and four. 4 - m= The difference of four and m. |
