Integers
The set of numbers consisting of whole numbers and their opposites.
Natural Numbers
Set of numbers consisting of 1 and any other number that can be formed by adding 1 to a member of the set.
Whole Numbers
Set Numbers consisting of naturals AND zero.
Algebra
A branch of mathematics that uses mathematical statements to describe relationships between certain quantities that vary.
Associative
The grouping of numbers does not affect their sum or product.
(a+b)+c=a+(b+c)
Algebraic Expression
A mathematical expression containing at least one variable.
Rational Numbers
Set of numbers consisting of any number that can be written a/b where a and b are integers (fractions.)
Formula
An algebraic sentence relating or comparing certain quantities.
Commutative Property
The order in which numbers are added or multiplied does not affect the sum / product.
Irrational Numbers
The set of numbers consisting of any number that is a non-terminating, non-repeating decimal
Variable
Symbol that takes the place of an unknown number.
Absolute Value
the distance that a given number is from 0 (zero) on the number line.
Open Sentence
a mathematical sentence, equation or inequality, that contains at least one variable
relation:
set of ordered pairs
domain
the set of first elements, x-coordinates, in a relation
range:
the set of second elements, y-coordinates, in a relation
function:
a relation in which each element of the domain maps to exactly one element of the range
linear equation
an equation containing 1 or 2 variables where no variable has an exponent other than 1
slope
the ratio of the change in vertical units to the change in horizontal units of any two points on a line (rise/run)
parallel lines:
two different lines on the same plane that have equal slopes
perpendicular lines
two different lines on the same plane whose slopes have a product of (-1) or whose slopes are opposite reciprocals of each other
direct variation:
a linear function with a y-intercept of zero and a slope that is not zero
identity function
a linear function, y=x, where each domain produces an identical range
constant function:
a horizontal linear function, y=b, where the range remains constant
system of equations
a collection of 2 or more equations containing the same set of variables
binomial:
a polynomial containing exactly two unlike terms
coefficient:
the numerical factor of a monomial
constant:
a monomial containing no variables
like terms:
two monomials that are exactly alike or differ only by their numerical coefficients
Monomial:
an expression that is a number, a variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables
polynomial:
a monomial or the sum of monomials
trinomial:
a polynomial containing exactly three unlike terms
