Factors that affect a burst of fire |
The gunner and rate of fire The gun and ammunition Clarity of target Air/weather Distance |
This is the curved path the round takes during its flight |
Trajectory |
This is the highest point above the line of sight which a projectile rises during its flight. About 2/3 the distance from weapon |
Maximum ordinate |
The pattern made by a group of rounds resulting from a burst of fire |
Cone of fire |
The elliptical pattern formed on the ground or target by the striking rounds |
Beaten zone |
The area between the muzzle of the weapon and the target where the trajectory rises less then 1.8m above the ground including the beaten zone |
Danger space |
The different kinds of the MGs fire in respect to the ground |
Grazing or plunging |
Name 4 different types of MG fire in respect to the target |
Frontal, flanking, oblique and enfilade |
The tyoes of MGs fire in respect to the weapon |
Fixed, traversing, searching, traverse and searching, free gun |
What is grazing fire |
A cone of fire that rises less then 1m above the ground. The danger space is from the barrel of the weapon to the farthest round impact |
What is plunging fire |
When the rounds arch and the danger zone is within the beaten zone. This is also a method of indirect fire |
What is frontal fire |
This occurs when the long access of the beaten zone is at a right angle to the front of the target |
What is flanking fire |
This occurs when the gunner fires at the side of the target |
What is oblique fire |
This occurs when the long access of the beaten zone is at an angle other then a right angle to the front of the target |
What is enfilade fire |
This occurs when the long access of the beaten zone coincides or nearly coincides with the long access of the target |
What is fixed fire |
This is delivered against a stationary point target when the depth and width of the beaten zone covers the target |
What is traversing fire |
This distributes in width by successive changes in direction |
What is searching fire |
This is distributed in depth by successive changes in elevation |
What is traversing and searching fire |
This is a combination in which successive changes in direction and elevation |
What is free gun fire |
When fire is delivered against targets requiring major changes in direction and elevation. This is used free of the T&E |
Describe a sustained rate of fire |
The normal rate of fire for a gunner where the weapon doesn't require excessive barrel changes |
Describe a rapid rate of fire |
Barrel changes every 2 minutes. Allows an exceptionally high volume if fire but only for a short period |
Describe a cyclic rate of fire |
This is achieved when the trigger is held to the rear uninterrupted for 1 minute |
