Types of electromagnetic radiation |
|
|
What type of electromagnetic radiation travels at the speed of light and are measured in hertz? |
Radio waves |
Listen to music |
|
What type of electromagnetic radiation is on the red side of visible light and cannot be seen with your eyes? |
Infrared radiation |
Heat signature |
|
What type of electromagnetic radiation is what your eyes can see? |
Visible light |
Eyes equal |
|

What are the basic principles and characteristics of infrared radiation? |
1. IR is emitted by all objects above the temp of 0 degrees Kelvin (-273 degrees centigrade) commonly called heat waves. 2. IR is not visible to the human eye. 3. Warm objects emit more IR radiation than cooler objects. |
|
|
What is a Class 1 source of infrared radiation? |
Sun glint is IR radiation from the sun which is reflected off the metal skin and Plexiglass of the aircraft. |
Coolest heat signature |
|
What is a Class 2 source of infrared radiation? |
Radiation given off by aircraft hot metal surfaces. Class 2 radiation is the major contributor to the IR signiture of the aircraft and originates primarily from hot engine components such as the tail pipe. |
Mid-range heat signature |
|
What is a Class 3 source of infrared radiation? |
Hot gas plume emitted by the aircraft exhaust. |
Hottest heat signature |
|
What are two Military uses of infrared radiation? |
1. Thermal Imaging Systems. (TIS) 2. Surface to Air Missiles. (SAM's) SA-7, SA-14, SA-18, STINGER |
TIS and SAM's |
|
What type of equipment is anti-reflective IR paint, dull anti-reflective paint which reduces and spreads out the reflection of the IR radiation. |
A type of Passive Aircraft Survivability Equipment (ASE)? |
Incorporated into aircraft design and do not require pilot activation. |
|
What is the second type of Passive Aircraft Survivability Equipment (ASE)? |
Flat plate canopy, reduces sun glint. |
|
|
What type of equipment is a flat plate canopy which reduces sun glint. |
A type of Passive Aircraft Survivability Equipment (ASE)? |
Incorporated into aircraft design and do not require pilot activation. |
|
What type of equipment are engine exhaust suppressors that mix ambient air with exhaust to reduce temperature of exhaust plume and tail pipe. |
A type of Passive Aircraft Survivability Equipment (ASE)? |
Incorporated into aircraft design and do not require pilot activation. |
|
What type of equipment are Decoy Flares and AN/ALQ 144A Infrared jammer? |
Active Infrared Aircraft Survivability Equipment. |
Require some pilot interaction |
|
What is the use of Decoy Flares as an active infrared ASE? |
Decoy flares, are an effective countermeasure against some IR guided missile systems. |
Missles |
|
What is the use of AN/ALQ 144A Infrared jammer as an active infrared ASE? |
AN/ALQ 144A Infrared jammer protects light attack, utility and observation helicopters from IR missile systems. |
Missles |
|
Which active infrared ASE decoy flare system is manually deployed? |
M-130 Manual deployment systems, M-206 flares are deployed from the M-130 payload component after receiving pilot input. The reaction time of the pilot is a limitation with this system. |
M Series |
|
Which active infrared ASE decoy flare system is automatically deployed? |
ALQ-156 Doppler radar controlled automatic deployment system. It supplements the M-130 deployment system. Fielded on the CH-47 D it automatically deploys M-206 flares if a missal is detected entering aircraft’s field of protection. (It's capable of deploying chaff if payload component is loaded with chaff) |
