HIV stands for..
human immunodeficiency virus
What is AIDS?
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
How does a person get AIDS?
HIV can be spread through any type of unprotected sex (oral, vaginal, or anal) if one of the partners has the virus. This can happen when body fluids such as semen, vaginal fluids, or blood from an infected person get into the body of someone who is not infected. Someone can become infected even if only tiny amounts of these fluids are spread (OR IF YOU GET BLOOD FROM A PERSON INFECTED BY HIV)
Why is AIDS such a problem in Africa?
The people in Africa who are mostly impacted by AIDS, live in rural areas and can't afford medicine to treat AIDS or the can't afford medical help. Since Africans can't afford medicine, they die and leave the work force. Since parents are dying, their children are being orphaned and the food security is being threatened.
Impact on Economy
When Africans die they leave the work force and companies go out of business.
Impact on families
When Africans die, they leave behind the oldest and youngest generation. The younger generation needs to be taken care of and also the older generation, so the families without the middle generation cannot take care of themselves and die..
What can we, Americans, do as great global citizens?
We can send flyers to people to tell them what is going on and what we could do, we could set up schools in Africa to educate the next generation, or we could find cheaper medications that Africans can afford.
Negative affects in Afrca?
The economy drops, the families are disoriented, children are orphaned, the elder generation isn't being cared for and is dying off also
