The Gun Debate
Who: Adam Lanza, other rifle/gun owners in the United States
What: December's tragedy in Newtown, CT, is prompting a new look at the nation's gun laws.
Where: Newtown, CT, United States of America
When: December 14th, 2012 & Present Day
Why: The nation's gun control issues have become a priority issue, as shootings in Aurora, CO & Newtown, CT have raised international awareness of gun issues. These mass killing sprees have forced legislature to pass multiple gun laws.
Details (FACTS): Using a M-16 rifle, Lanza fatally killed 26 people in Newtown. James Holmes, using the same weapon, brutually murdered 12 people in Colorado. Gun control has been an issue of constitutional rights over the years, and many bans (such as the 1994 Brady law) have banned assault weapons. The Justice Department looks to "revive plans and expand background checks".
Obama's Slave Roots
Who: President Barack Obama, the Obama Family
What: New research indicates that Barack Obama's mother was descended from one of the earliest slaves in America.
Where: Virginia, United States
When: 1640 (around middle-age for Obama's slave grandfather)
Why: It had long been assumed that the nation's first black president didn't have any personal ties to slavery. New research suggests otherwise
Details(FACTS): Obama's grandfather, John Punch, was an escapee slave from Virginia, who was later recaptured and sentenced to life servitude. Michelle Obama is also the descendant of a young slave girl and an unknown white man. Mark Bunch was surprised to find his connections to President Obama as apart of his family genealogy project.
A Right to Jeer?

What: Some sports teak are trying to limit how much fans express themselves at sporting events.
Where: Division 1,2,3 universities/colleges
When: Present Day
Why: The limiting of fan interaction has become a major first amendment issue
Details(FACTS): For years, crowds such as the "Cameron Crazies" of Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium have caused uproar and put tremendous pressure on opposing teams. The debate over jeering fans have been a center topic of 1st amendment debate, as in whether this sanction is allowed in public vs privately owned facilities.
Failure is not an Option
Who: Chinese high school students hoping to gain college entrance
What: China's annual entrance exam can make or break young lives
Where: Peoples Republic of China
When: Present Day
Why: China has become a growing economic superpower, partly due to its strong student population.
Details(FACTS): Students like Liu Qichao study hours a day for the Gaokao. This chinese entrance exam resembles the SAT, however the stakes are much higher for these students. The academic competition has been increased in China, which has proven to be a factor in their recent academic & economic successes.
